Moving from good ole lower Alabama to new duty station in Texas and looking for advice and everyone's expertise and knowledge. I have a 2019 SR5 Tacoma and need to tow my wife's car behind me. Other vehicle is a 2018 BMW X1. Just want to make sure i'll be able to pull it behind me. Her car will be empty and low on gas to minimize weight. Thanks guys and look forward to everyones respones.

    X1 curb weight: 3700 pounds

    UHaul hauler weight: 2210 pounds.

Youre right at max, but it should be doable

Edit: UHaul has a strange formula that doesn't like when the truck is less than 80% of the trailer. Which means they might not rent to you for towing any car that weighs more than 3100 poinds. FYI

^^This. I threw some sample numbers into the UHaul website and it wasn't happy with the setup. Also, for those prices I'd ship it for a couple of hundred dollars more and not have to deal with the hassle.

Or fly back one-way to drive the beamer to Tx.

The better question is, what is the wife driving? Drive each car separately, or if she's driving the moving truck, Put the car hauler on that and have the wife drive the Tacoma.

Do you have a brake controller?

Excellent suggestion although he may be relying on a moving company to move his personal effects. In that case there wouldn't be a moving van as a professional moving company is hired. I always moved myself and pocketed the $ when I PCS'd out but I know some who prefer letting a moving company deal with all the hassles of moving.

Let the u-haul truck pull a trailer ... those trucks are ungraceful to say the least but they are workhorses.

I get the impression he is military. The feds will move your stuff but vehicle transport is on you. Maybe contact the transport company to see how much and if they can trans the beamer?

I second the shipping of the vehicle. You might have to wait a few days for the vehicle as they will put it on a shipment already enroute to your general location.

Might want to look into the military helping out. 25 years on active and 10 with an agency and they have shipped my vehicle several times and those were remote overseas locations ( Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Johannesburg, etc).

Sometimes if you don’t meet your hhg limits they will give you a credit towards vehicle shipping. Do some digging before you decide to tow. That’s close to the weight limit and not worth the risk in my opinion. One or two hundred miles sure but not that far.

This subject comes up fairly often and I think the consensus is that it is best to drive each car separately. Cars are heavy and many cannot be flat towed thus requiring a heavy trailer. I've never seen a Taco towing a car on the freeway.

You could buy a pair of cheap handset radios to keep in contact with each other on the drive.

Tesla cannot be flat towed I think. They also burn for up to a month if the batteries spark.

OP said she had a BWM X1, not a Tesla. Many cars cannot be flat towed including the Taco.
