My sons 2008 Tacoma just threw three codes this morning out of the blue, went straight to O'reilleys, and had them pull the codes as follows:

P0335 (1/3): 1. Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circut, 2. Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit (NE Signal)
    P0012 (2/3): Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank1)
    P0022 (3/3): Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)

I read in another forum about coolant getting on a sensor and flagging at least one of the codes and did notice the coolant level was low in the overflow.

Any suggestions, This is our first Tacoma, so still learning a lot about them.

How does it run? Any hiccups?

Truck won't run without a crank sensor signal so it's unusual to have the P0335 on a good running truck.

Was running fine, was found to be a couple quarts low on oil. Completed fresh oil change, reset check engine light and so far so good, so we will hope it was codes due to lack of oil and we caught it soon enough lol. Damn kids.

Low oil could definitely cause the timing codes as the cam timing is oil controlled.

Cam timing was "off" because low engine oil level condition as mentioned. Oil Pressure controls the Variable Cam Timing

Edit: Timing wasn't "off".. just the Position of the Cam was not where it's supposed to be

I'd recommend a second oil change. Don't want to have any sludge buildup from that old oil that got super low.

I'm sure you'll find that the oil you just put in will be pretty dark after a couple hundred miles. I bought a 2001 Miata that had been neglected and the vvt solenoid, and the actuator were basically destroyed because of this. Fortunately compression tests came back strong. I ran 2 short interval oil changes immediately after buying it with a high detergent oil (Rotella t6 I think) and the crap that came out was horrifying.

If it comes back (p0012) there's usually an oil screen in front of the solenoid that activates the vvt advance. Likely will need a cleaning and should be reusable. Hope you caught it in time!

Agree,he needs too check and change the oil regularly, or no vehicle will last very long.
