My transmission went belly up, and I'm unable to find a used one after several months of looking. Apparently this transmission (35010-3D550) was only used in the 99 model year, so is scarce. However I have seen this one: 35000-3D550. I'm guessing this one is for the 6cyl, while my truck is the 4cyl.

    1) Will swapping over my bell housing allow me to use this transmission?

My transmission is an A340F. I found a 35010-3D830 with transfer case, which seems to be an A340E configured for 4x4. Both configured with kick-down cable.

    2) Can I fit this combination to my truck?

    Thanks for your insights. Dave

So any A340F from any 1st Gen Tacoma made from 1995-2002 will work for you. 2003/2003 is the ETCS-I electronic kickdown transmission which isn’t compatible.

At most you’ll need to swap a few redundant temperature sensors. I used a 1999 A340F in my 1998 and two sensors were different but the old ones swapped over.

You can also use 4Runner transmissions, 1996-2002 just make sure it has the manual kickdown cable.

The part numbers on these transmissions are not very helpful. You can use most A340F’s made.

If you swap bellhousings you can use a four cylinder A340F.

Many thanks, Tyler. I will expand my search criteria. Still curious if that A340E with the transfer case would fit.

The F has the output shaft and extension housing configured to mate to a transfer case. Unless someone swapped those, it would be an F not an E if it fits to a transfer case without modification
