i have a r150f manual transmission in my 01 tacoma 4x4 3.4 v6. I just did a full bearing replacement, new syncros. After install, and on the last step of installing my gear shifter, i noticed my transmission will no longer shift. Its like its in neutral, but it is actually in gear. I can move the shifter to the right (bounces back), but will not move to the left at all. It is definitely in a forward gear and not reverse. Has anyone tried removing one of the little detends under the 6ml allen key then try moving the shifter back into the actual neutral postition? I did put the housing back together and stand on end to tighten some bolts during the last step of the transmission rebuild. its like something shifted when on end. i really hope i can somehow slide the rod back into position without having to rip it back open again

If you have things together correct you should be able to line things up with the top plate off.

I have had this happen a few times.

@gearcruncher is the Transmission Guru . I venture he could build them blind folded.

Shift rail issue, they are not lined up one is in gear the others are not. Pull the shifter off and move the one that doesn't match.

Can you explain this in a little more detail? I'm having the same issue with a rebuilt transmission. Supposed to be shipped in R but came looking like it was in neutral but its actually in a forward gear and it doesnt want to come out. I can move the shifter to the left but not the right at all? OP did you ever get yours to work?

Are you sure you placed your shifter in the hole correctly?
Take the shifter back out , use a large flat screwdriver and try to grab neutral.
You may have to rock the truck back and forth .
Sounds like an assembly issue at this point
Got any warranty on the rebuild ?

Is there something that can be done with a large screwdriver that cant be done using leverage from the gearshift itself to grab neutral? I've been in contact with the shop that rebuilt it and they keep saying that its possible that the 4th gear synchro could be stuck causing it to look like its in neutral but barely be in gear. Yes I have a warranty but if I didn't have to take the transmission back out and ship it back I would be really happy. lol

You can accidently install the shifter incorrectly.
That being said , take the shifter back out and verify your detents for the shifter are in neutral.
If the transmission was shipped to you with the detent in reverse , you should have to manually place the detents into neutral before the shifter will drop in place correctly.
Use a flat screwdriver once the shifter is removed to verify neutral.
This does happen from time to time at Tacoma world .
Got my fingers crossed that's all it is

Yes, verified that the shift socket shows neutral. The transmission was supposed to be shipped in reverse however it arrived showing neutral and in a forward gear. I took the reverse indicator out and used a flat head screwdriver to try and push the reverse gear backwards and it wouldn't budge. I have a feeling that it got dropped in shipping and locked something up inside.

    OP,
I could not find a local company that I would trust to do a quality rebuild on the R150F tranny in my '97 V6 Taco 4x4. What I found out the hard way is that the shipping companies really throw these rebuilt transmissions around hard during shipping. When Marlin rebuilt my R150F last summer, the tranny first arrived stuck in a forward gear with the shifter in neutral. Marlin said the only fix for the R150F stuck in a forward gear was to disassemble the R150F, so I pulled then returned it to Marlin at their expense. The second time around, the tranny was returned to me stuck in reverse with the shifter in neutral which can be fixed without disassembly. Following Marlin's advice, I took out the backup light switch and pried the gear back into neutral. All has been good ever since. Best of luck with your fix!

I am now 70 and very much agree. If I could have a redo on my R150F tranny rebuild nightmare, I would have just bought a high-quality OEM bearing/seal kit and installed it myself. I've done that quite a few times on other 4x4s and muscle cars since I was in high school in the '60s. Marlin did a very nice job rebuilding my R150F tranny, but the shipping monkeys rearranged the internals not just once but twice. Wow!

    I hear you !

Shipping damage is costing Trucking Companies big Dollars.

Not to mention keeping trailer manufactures in the black . 13.6' just does not clear 12' no matter how fast you drive.
