I checked my owner's manual and it states the required tranny fluid: D-II. DEXRON III (DEXRON II).

I want to get the best high mileage fluid. I need to do some towing.

I checked Castrol and Valvoline on three different sites (Castrol's, AutoZone and Amazon) that say they're compatible with my 2001 SR5 PreRunner V6.

But they both list on the bottles "Toyota Type T, T-III, T-VI."

They all say to check your manual before ordering.

    Is "T" the new "D?" Texron/Dexron.

Or any recommendation for a better high mileage tranny fluid?

Is anyone running the Toyota OEM tranny fluid when they service their trannys?

The toyota type 4 is toyota specific and very few people make it. There's no full synthetic option which is why the valvoline maxlife is popular. I've run it in several built toyota transmissions with no issues. The best trans fluid upgrade is a bigger cooler.

It today’s age you need to ask the tranny fluid what it identifies as. Best not to assume. Wouldn’t want to offend the air outside.

When you inherit a truck and dont know its history, its safest to either 'leave it alone' or over do whatever you do.....

Probably the biggest chunk of people here run the Max-life.....

and because the oem is pre synthetic, its a little bit of pain flushing all the old out....
however hydraulic fluids are more cross tolerant...

Doing this and adding an oversize cooler would be best bet you ever did on your truck.....

unless its already gone too far...
