Engine D-4S V6. So what do you all think about this engine, I’m not to familiar with it, is it easy maintenance, like oil and spark plug change… feel free to include anything else you think.

Fine engine, easy to work on. Power is more in the top end unless you get a tune, then it becomes a mid but still mostly top end engine. A few hiccups every now and then like every other engine ever made but all in all it's a great engine that will run for a long time if maintained. Anything after 2019 should be pretty much hiccup free. The odd issue may pop up but a small percentage in comparison to how many are on the road

 

They are good engines that sometimes have very expensive issues before 100k.

 

No idea why they keep lurking in the 3rd gen forum and shitting on every other thread … I can’t imagine going to the 2nd Gen forum and doing the same or 4th gen for that matter

 

I've owned a 2nd gen and now 2 3rd gens. Just bought a brand new 2023. People on here freak out as soon as 3rd gen reliability is questioned. It's like people take it personally.

After logging tons of miles in a 2nd and 3rd gen, the 2nd gen still has the better drivetrain in my opinion.

The 3.5 is a good motor but not a great motor.

haven't changed the oil yet myself. Definitely a high revving engine. People that complain about it usually are not revving it up to what it likes. Engine really does like it rough.

Way more balls than 2nd gen. 4000 rpm+ and it goes. Anyone that says 2nd gen is better isn't revving the engine hard enough.

 

I will definitely visit the 4th gen forum and talk bad about it due to sheer jealously.

 

If I had extra cash, I wouldn’t mind picking up a manual 2026 But I know that’s not gonna happen.

 

There is no prefect engine... the 2GR-FKS D4-S engine works well enough. It has given me 95,000kms of flawless service. And I recently asked it to start towing a 3000lb travel trailer. So far it isn't protesting the extra work when I have towed.

It is important to understand the engine to get the most out of it. As others have mentioned, it likes to rev and prefers to be over 2000rpm to start making power.

Yes there have been failures reported but every engine ever produced has had failures...

I am happy with mine.

 

The 3.5 is a branch of the same GR V6 lineage tree that dates back over 20 years, so it’s reliable and reasonably DIY, despite a sprinkling of advanced features. D4S also ensures that your valves won’t get carboned up at 100k mi. Used in virtually everything Toyota & Lexus made that rolled on four wheels, so bet on excellent parts availability and relative affordability.

Really, the only widespread “issue” that the 2GR-FKS seemed to ever have was it apparently took (some of) the 2nd gen owner’s lunch money.
