i tried some 75w-140 on ECGS recommendations and that was so freakin' slow. It was ridiculous. emptied it out for 80w-90 conventional and even that feels a little bit sluggish compared to the 75w-90 synthetic i had my rear diff before they replaced it under warranty. sounds better though. no high pitch ringing noise under acceleration anymore. didn't even think anything was wrong with it but they said there was "excessive bearing clearance". i brought it in for tire/wheel/bearing noise. went from 24.5 mpg to 19 with the 140. felt like i was towing a small trailer when accelerating. only scenario i would use 140 weight is if i was building a dedicated low-speed off-road rig where i'd be in 4lo a lot.

It only happens with the locking rear end as I understand.

I have a 2022, this noise started around 8,000 km. Prior to that, it was totally normal. Toyota replaced the rear differential, no change at all. The service bulletin was completed which included enhanced cab mounts and foam pads, no change. This whining noise happens on deceleration and around 50 mph. The truck is going back to the dealer shortly and their field rep is scheduled to investigate the noise. Hoping he has the final fix solution because I’m done with it.

Yeah these trucks are not what some make them out to be, they have lots of real issues and many smaller annoyances. And now the recall, which looks like an easy fix, but still. I'm still weighing my options. Full size, another midsize from a different manufacturer, or forget trucks and find a nice comfortable quite SUV for road trips.

In most cases it's with models that have the rear locking differential. From searching nearly all trucks have the noise to some degree. There's a TSB that consists of adding different cab mounts and some foam block insolation.

Some have had the differentials replaced multiple times sometimes with success sometimes the noise was worse. When it comes down to it it's a harmonics problem. Gust think back to riding in an old school bus and how loud the differentials were it's basically the same thing. But it really shouldn't occur in a modern light truck. It's not the best engineering. The good news is they don't seem do be failing, they're just noisy.

If the truck doesn't meet one's expectations, sell it and buy something enjoyable. The good news is Tacoma's hold their value like crazy.
