I have a 2016 tacoma with 212000 miles on it. I have to either replace or rebuild the rear axle. I found a 2018 tacoma axle. Can the 2018 rear axle be used on my 2016?

What’s wrong with the rear axle?

The differential is going bad as well as both sides bearings and seals need to be replaced. Two different shops recommended rebuilding or replacing the axle.

I think the SR5, TRD Sport and Limited all have the same rear axle. The Off Road and Pro have a locker. You will definitely need one out of an automatic, the manuals have a different gear ratio.

I wouldn't replace is with a used axle. You don't know what kind of shape the parts on the used are in. I would just rebuild the ones you have.

Replace the rear axle like you’re about to do, nothing wrong with it as long as the truck wasn’t wrecked from behind or near the rear axle. Just make sure gear ratios match up and you’ll be squared away. Easy job.

On your door stickers, there is an axle code.
Some early SR5 and Sports have A04 , 3.71 diff. Check before buying. May need replace the front one

Order new third member. Send yours in when you get the new one. Have new bearings pressed on. Seals are replaced at this time. Install axles and new third member. I’ve done it a few times on other peoples trucks. It’s not hard just take your time and go slow. Or even better if you live within 4 or 5 hours of them take a road trip to ECGS.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

People wreck these trucks every day, get a low mile unit, you can change it in your driveway with hand tools. Change the fluid too.

Choose carefully, don't get one that got hit hard on the box side for example.

The simple answer to your question is 'Yes'. All 3rd gen rear differential assemblies will fit into any other 3rd gen Tacoma.

There are some differences to note.
There are 2 different axle ratios available and 2 different ring gear sizes available depending on options.

    For V6 trucks.

All automatic trucks have 3.91:1 ratios

All manual trucks have 4.30:1 and a 8.75" ring gear.

If equipped with an E-locker then the truck will have a 8.75" ring gear. ( Auto or standard )

All Auto without E-locker will have an 8.0" ring gear.

    4cyl auto have 4.30:1 ratios

    4cyl standard have 3.91:1 ratios.

Tons of SR5 and Sport have A04 axle code.
Which is left overs from 2nd gen TRD trims 3.71:1 diff
Op had 4×4 and should be careful selecting a proper part
