Looking to purchase a 3rd Gen. Tacoma. What trim does everyone recommend? And Why? Looking to do mostly Overlanding and some Off-Roading.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
YouTube should give some good guidance. Is any questions arise we’ll be here. Cheers.

I purchased an SR5 knowing that I was going to mod it pretty heavily to my own liking. It’s 4x4, I don’t need a locker because I only do light to medium trails, and if I re-gear down the road I will add a locker then.

No sense in me paying more for a more expensive trim if I’m just going to change everything anyway. It’s been an incredible truck so far. I wanted a lower monthly payment so I had more money to buy aftermarket stuff. So far my plan has worked very well.

Really depends on what you want and need though.

Normally how much would it be to add a locker? Thanks

its all up to you. what do you want from your truck.
^ that guy wanted to rip everything out and replace it with aftermarket parts, so he got SR5.

i wanted the rear locker and a-trac for off roading....so i got the TRD off road.

or do you care about looks more? get the TRD sport with the hood scoop and painted mirrors and rear bumper

it depends. front? rear? electric or air? would the air system cost be included in the locker cost, or will you not factor it in because you're already doing it regardless to air up/down at trailheads? are you re-gearing at the same time? will you be performing the diff work, or leaving it to a local shop? if front locker, do you need to factor in heavier duty cv axles?

honestly, i think you lack some personal direction before jumping down the rabbit hole. you know what your needs and budget are, but
really haven't described much of that to us other than 'some offroading and overlanding'.

is this a "no holds barred, i'm budgeting $60k for the truck and another $80k in upgrades, i need an entirely self-sufficient and over-built overland rig that can sustain 12+weeks at a time while traversing the extreme alaskan wilderness", or "me and the kids might take it to a campground for a 2-day weekend, and i need to drive on a gravel fire service road to get there"?

I think you answered your own question. Also IMO , TRD OR is best bang for the buck.

FWIW, all 3rd gens come with awesome TC system that works awesome off-road. 100 times better than open diffs.

So for just FSRs and an occasional obstacle, base model would suffice.

Doing anything off-road. TRD OR all the way. Read locker, crawl control, MTS. Worth it.
