I went to finally install the steering wheel controls adapter so that my after market stereo can benefit from the volume buttons, etc. on the steering wheel, but once I got in there I noticed that the wiring harness is missing, nowhere to be found!

I suspect the previous owner went on the cheap and didn't want to spent $200 bucks on the adapter and required harness, I figured he cut the OEM harness off and tried to connect the wiring manually (no adapter).

I'm in a pickle. How do I sort this out? What are my options here? I really want those damn steering controls, I have the required harness AND the adapter.

Thanks for reading, and would greatly appreciate any help.

Do you have evidence of cut wire butchery? Or just assuming it?

Definitely an assumption, no evidence yet as far as I was able to find.

Is it possible that the original steering wheel lacked the controls and he installed one "with the controls" but no OEM wiring for them? I can't imagine it would be that, but maybe a small chance?

Also, if he did cut off the OEM wire harness, I would imagine if he wasn't able to make it work, he would have insulated the ends and would have tucked them somewhere? Might need to dig further I guess.

    EDIT/UPDATE:

I looked up the 2007 Tacoma, and it appears that the JBL Speakers / Sub + Steering Wheel Controls is an optional addon. I don't see the JBL emblems anywhere, so I'm leaning towards the scenario that he simply swapped the steering wheel for one with the controls.

Maybe because the variant didn't have this optional package, that the harness was just never available from the start?
