i am curious about your driving style and use of the truck - highway, city, towing, hauling, how you accelerate, typical RPM's between shifts, etc.

i hope it all works out in your favor. please keep us updated.

4000 miles mix of city and highway. No towing or off-roading ever. No heavy hauling/loads. No red-lining drag racing.
Only ever fueled with too tier gas.

I owned this exact truck with engine before few years back and sold with 30k miles and had no engine problem.

Dealer gave me a free loaner. It just so happens to be brand new 2023 Tacoma with same exact engine.
Video comparison shown at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYUgvZlq4hA
Dealer states that they are waiting for Toyota engineers to give them final list of parts to replace.

Dealer Update Today: states multiple parts being ordered including cams, timing chain, timing chain sprocket, oil pump, OCU, 1 cylinder head but maybe 2 heads, hydraulic lifters, vacuum pump (which is on NATIONAL BACK ORDER). Dealer states initially looks like issue stemming from manufacturing debris.

some sluggish behavior, especially up inclines with pulsing/light kicking, felt like missing at times but no codes/MIL and tried different octane fuels with some improvement with midgrade but not significant.

    Update - still at shop.
Went in and asked to talk to mechanics and dealer was nice enough to take me back into shop.
Engine in pieces. Talked to actual technician working on it. Stated noise was from stuck / failed hydraulic lash adjuster.
It was hitting so hard it put a mark in the lash adjuster socket into the aluminum head (cam side).
Tech stated originally suspected rod bearing and noise vanished when disconnecting offending cylinder but there was no rod bearing failure.

They found some scoring on some bearings on main crank so entire lower block being replaced as well.
They stated they don't know for sure what the original cause / source of failure was.
There was aluminum type material in oil filter housing and more nonmagnetic particles in oil pan.
Engine block and heads being sent to Toyota for evaluation.

Vehicle completion still halted due to national back order of vacuum pump. They are replacing multiple components out of precaution it seems which is good (main block with pistons/crank/bearings, heads, cams, hydraulic lash adjusters, rollers, vacuum pump, oil pump, etc...) basically whole new engine in major parts with re-use of minor parts.

Thats the clicking noises I've heard in the first video....I thought it may have been the op moving their phone around. If not the phone, there is something going on in the engine that I do not hear in mine. My engine sounds pretty normal, its not loud like others I've heard.

Hopefully that was all covered under warranty. Amazing how much damage a little bit of debris can cause.

I paid nothing, all warranty - I saw invoice total from dealer to Toyota and do not want to divulge the total exact price but it was more than half the value of the truck. I drove the truck out of the lot, 1 mile down the street and sold it to a different dealership disclosing and providing all copies of work done.

Sorry to hear you got rid of it. It's certainly understandable though. Your issue is not common though, for what it is worth.

Not sure what noise yours was making since the video is no longer available, but this is my new 2023 TRD OR. It’s been making a slight ticking/knocking noise since day 1.

Been having some anxiety about whether this is normal or not. People say it’s the “self-cleaning injectors” but that noise is not the same as this. This noise is constant and always present when the engine is warm. I’ve actually found a ton of videos of the 2GR making this exact noise which makes me think it’s either normal, or the engine has an issue that Toyota won’t acknowledge.

If you go to the Chevy or Ram forums they claim this noise is a valve train/lifter issue. But people in the Toyota forums say it’s completely normal. Lol
