It’s very possible it’s normal, but it just seems rather loud and aggressive. Like something is gonna eventually wear out or break. I wish I had a video. You would probably be able to tell me if it is what you’re describing.

Yeah I imagine so…I would take it to the dealer…if they say it is normal then ask them to demonstrate the noise on a new truck on the lot..if another truck makes the same noise then it’s normal…

My truck has done this since day 1 and has been to the dealer for it. Something ya gotta live with unless you like upgrading springs and stuff.

I am completely okay if it’s normal. I’m just worried cause it’s a brand new truck, and is the largest purchase I’ve ever made. I have never heard anything like it on any vehicle. We have a GMC on our jobsite with 230k miles and it sounds better when shifting, so I was pretty spooked when mine sounded the way it does.

To ease your concerns, go to the dealer. Just don’t expect a lot to come from that. I would imagine you’re just not used to this and might be a bit hypersensitive after just spending the money. But, it could be worse than normal as well. A video would help. I will say you do have a long warranty ahead of you if something is wrong with it.

Regardless, I can promise you my 2021 is clunky as all hell, like all my vehicles before it. Bumps in the road at slow speed (10 mph) really get some gnarly clunking. Mine is a manual though. I have regeared as well, noise didn’t change. I think it’s the spider gears that have some slight slack in them, but I don’t know for sure. One of my previous automatic trucks did the exact same behavior as yours though from D to R to D.

Yea, I get that. It can be pretty violent sometimes depending on RPM. The axle is somewhat twisting angles as you go from P to R or D, or even R to D.

I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, explain, and ease my mind. I agree the dealerships seem to be a dead end. If I can get a buddy to video it tomorrow I will. But it sounds like you know exactly what I’m experiencing. Thanks again!

Also I think slack is a great way to describe it. Almost like the gap/slack is closing and gears are catching each other, thus making the clunking noise

That would make sense as well. Maybe I should take a video from underneath and see if that’s the source of the sound. I definitely don’t want to to put anymore money into it right now haha. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and ease my mind. Thank you

Is there any way you can visit another dealership and explain the issue and also having them let you try another truck on the lot to see if does the same thing?

Perhaps it's a binding slip yoke?

Mine has had this problem since day one.

I have a 22 6-speed manual V6 TRD off-road and mine used to clunk all the time and I thought something was wrong with the truck I wound up changing all my fluid to amsoil full synthetic after I did the rear end 90% of the clunking went away unless I hit a really bad shift which is operator error but the truck didn't even sound the same after the fluid change (way better) and I've changed transfer case front diff rear diff and manual transmission. Everything was amsoil except the transfer case which I used red line mt-lv... I live in Phoenix bought the truck brand went to use the air conditioner didn't even work had to have a hose replaced evacuated and recharged and then I went to use my 4x4 system got stuck in four-wheel drive and needed the front diff actuator replaced truck has never even been off road and obviously very well taken care of and I've had 3 ️ changes in the first 7,000 miles or 1st year. Fluid is relatively cheap + easy to do and last much longer than factory fluids if u slack it. Just a quick easy remedy to get rid of most of that clunkiness. When I took the truck in for the front diff actuator I was talking with the service guy about that clunkiness and he said did the clunking is go away when you changed it to amsoil so he knew that that remedy the problem from what his response was

You can take it to any dealer you want if it’s under warranty! Make a road trip and find another dealer. Don’t tell them you took it somewhere else.
