I notice there is paint chip along the edge on my front passenger door after I brought the Tacoma back from the shop that did the Ceramic coating and ceramic tint.

There was originally a door edge guard installed by the dealership that they had to remove so they can "polish" it properly, and I told them not to put it back, well luckily I did, otherwise I wouldn't see the damage they caused.

What do I do now, do I make some noise? I am scheduled to go back there after 10 days for them to check the coating. Is this repairable, or I just have to suck it up?

That’s a tough one, you could touch up paint that yourself fairly easily, but if you’re unable to let it go, and understandably so, I would speak with the manager about it first, go right to the top dog, be polite, and courteous but firm in your expectations. Maybe you fix it yourself, but they go back over the touch up paint with the ceramic coating?
I think I would let them know regardless of what your expectations are, and the sooner the better. The fact that it’s in a spot where the plastic came off suggests one of two things, it came like that from the factory and it was hidden to you or one of the techs did it when they removed the guard.
Tip when using touch up paint, don’t paint, fill the chip, use a tooth pic, or something similar, dip and fill the chip in, repeat until it looks to your liking.

what makes you assume they damaged it, and that the dealer chipping it was the reason the door edge guard was originally installed?

did they admit to causing the damage? did you have the door edge guard removed previously before they worked on it?

It’s the first of many to come, I would just touch it up and put the edge guards back……you’ll never see it again.

I have not spoken to them yet as I only saw it after I took it home. The door edge guards were "factory" installed when I ordered the truck, not added by the dealership.

was it on the window sticker? because i'm not aware of any factory, or port installation procedures that end up with door edge guards. i suspect the dealer, or transport smudged it, and made an adjustment before it got to you--they might have said it's a factory installed option, but peruse any dealer lot, and no cars will have them. it's only the new work that the detailer did that is bringing it to light.

i absolutely remove any plastic or rubber trim that can be removed before prepping/polishing/coating a vehicle, and it's absolutely a proper step in the process of ceramic coating a vehicle.

i know this goes against the ethos of this forum, to not be calling for the killing of the detailers first born, and then tank his business till he's left with nothing, but i just don't see how this is the detailers fault, and am instead highly suspicious that you were lied to during the original purchase by a flaky salesman trying to meet their monthly quota, despite them likely no longer working at the dealer by the time the issue is dealt with.

If OP is one to name his vehicles, I believe, CHIP would be a suitable name for it.

You want to employ a 2 step paint correction here.

Step 1: Apply touch up paint
Step 2: Move on with life

Did you not inspect the truck when you picked it up? If you did and didn’t notice then it’s on you. Could have happened on the drive home. Most good shops that do this type of work wouldn’t have let that slide and leave the shop that way imo. I’d call the shop and just say hey I noticed a chip on the door edge when I got home could you guys fix it when I bring in for my inspection. They may just take care of it for you.

    1. not sure how many dealerships you’ve perused but several install door edge guards, and certain years they have been installed prior to dealership arrival.

I did, but I got distracted because when I inspected the driver's side, I immediately noticed many bubbles on the tint, then the fender flares are also full of smudges (the stuff that gets on it coming from tires), then all the door sills are dirty, so I went back to the shop to ask them to clean them, then I also noticed some imperfections on the front fender. They called the guy who's doing he buffing, and he said it was dried wax, and they brought it back inside while I waited. When they handed the truck back to me, I just left and forgot to check the doors on the passenger side.

Definitely not the worst sucker punch I've seen on a Tacoma by a long shot.

But yeah, they got you good on the overlays and mudflaps.

Well, I went back and spoke to the shop owner... he blamed me saying someone opened the door and hit something, I replied, I'm the only one using the truck and have never had a passenger and I only park inside my garage. I also just drive around and have not parked it anywhere else. I also told him it was done by his employees when they removed the door edge guards, he then denied there was no door edge guard.. then I reminded him it was the metal guards that was the same color as my truck.. he then said the chip was too low and door edge guards don't go that low. I then reminded him again that it went all the way nearly to the bottom of the door. Then he said he would blame Toyota for the paint chip. He also pointed out some gaps on my fended that it shouldn't be that way LMAO... I asked him what he can do, he asked me to bring a touch up paint and he will touch it up for me LMAO...

This is the gap he was talking about, it is wider that on the opposite side, it is solid though. This guy will get a very negative review after I going back there on my vehicle's checkup and replacement of the dirty and bubbly windows tints they installed. What a fucking experience this is, I brought my truck for paint protection and tint and trusted them to do great job... it seems you can't trust anyone these days.

I believe the door edge guards are a port installed option so unless you removed them prior to taking it to the detailer then it could have happened any time during transit of the vehicle, who knows. Honestly it’s a truck and you will get scratches and chips the longer you own it. I have my truck ceramic coated and cared for about a year and then just more so gave up on worrying about little issues like that. I wash maybe every couple months now and the coating till looks fine. Get a touch up pen off Amazon and just dab it on there. A chip that small won’t even be noticeable after a touch up.

It’s hard to say say who did it.

A good shop/technician would have stopped immediately when they noticed the chip.
Made a note of it, better yet, called the customer (you) and told them there was a chip in the paint.
It is hard to believe that the guy doing the coating didn’t see it. I mean, he literally had to have gone over that area.

On the other hand, maybe it wasn’t there when he did the coating?
And if so, he couldn’t have seen it. And didn’t do it. (Because it wasn’t chipped then)

    Personally, I’d let it go.
Use some touch up paint and focus on other critical areas of the truck.
It’s good you are taking measures to help protect the paint.
But I would have focused on the frame first. The frame will rust out long before the pant gives out.
And I am being serious, COAT THE FRAME NOW. Keep it coated. I don’t care of if you live in the south west or California. Coat it.
