Today was the first time I've attempted to do a drain/refill of the rear differential. Access is actually easier than changing the motor oil.

I used a funnel with a flex hose that fit pretty tightly in the hole. It was hard to give it a bit of an air gap because of the brake cable that runs across the fill hole.

After filling, waiting, filling, waiting, filling 'till some started to spill out, I waited for it to stop coming out of the fill hole but it just kept dripping every 2 seconds. This went on for at least 10 minutes and was still dripping. I captured about 4 oz already before capping it.

I don't understand why the excess wouldn't just pour out to the level line, rather than dripping. Should I remove the fill plug again and let it finish dripping? Is there danger in overfilling? I'm sure it's got at least the required 2.7 qts.

It's not a precise thing, you nailed it. Nothing to worry about.
