    Ryan,
John may have responded to you on this, but here's my 2cents.

The mapping is available to do this in VFT, however we're not going to set-up our tune to have a full lockup in 3rd all the time. If that's something you're dead set on, I'd steer you elsewhere as that's not something we're going to be able to provide you. We've gone to great lengths to ensure our transmission calibration is optimized for this platform. It's been thoroughly tested - even beyond the published towing capacities from Toyota to ensure optimal operation. Our transmission calibration settings have appropriate lock up/release points scheduled to match our revised shift scheduling, ensuring optimal operation to keep transmission temps reasonable.

Given your location, if you haven't already something you can do to help is pin the thermostat. Ideally you should look at a larger transmission cooler if you do not already have one.

I hope this helps. I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but I'm not here to sell you something just for the sake of selling you something.

I appreciate the response and the 3rd gear lock up isn't a deal breaker. In fact I didn't even mention the 3rd gear in my message to OTT. I'm still interested in trying it out and may do it. I assume installing it will be the same procedure as installing KDMax but will be the OTT files instead, does that sound about right?

I did pin my Trans T-stat but appreciate you mentioning it anyway.

I went from kdmax 9 to OTT and it's much better, especially low end torque and highway cruise in 6th. I have not tried kdmax 10 though.

The low end torque is what I find appealing. Some folks say the overall smoothness is better too.... which I also find highly appealing. I do like KDMax much better that the stock tune... it's certainly not bad. Also, I didn't notice much difference when swapping from 9.0 to 10.0.

Thank you for understanding. I wont go as far as to says our transmission tuning will eliminate your issue, but it's possible you'll find the combination of our shift schedule, TCC lock-up/release schedule helps your temperatures somewhat. I think you'll probably find the most effective solution is a larger cooler to help with the thermal management.

Installation will be 100% identical to what you have done with KD's files. Nothing different procedurally at all.

    Appreciate your interest!

@JustDSM I have your tune from 2020 and am wondering if there is a newer file since? Is there any advantage in going to a local tuner to data log and dial things in?

    Yes sir!

Please reach out to your tuner, or send us an email to info@overlandtailor.com if you had a self-install tune pack. We'll get you updated.

Posted this in another thread where someone was concerned about negative mileage impact with an OTT tune. Thought I'd add it here as well. Today's freeway results (avg 70 MPH or so). Had the tune done last February - OE wheels with Toyo A/T III tires. Best mileage it's had since we bought it and best money I've spent to date! (OTT... tires are great too ;)). Thanks OTT!

Planning on doing a tune not sure which just yet. I have a 2.7 and drive it in S mode 4 in town and then S mode 5 on the highway. Does anyone still use the S mode after the tune

Yes I have a 2.7 and use S mode still. I usually keep it in 5 around town since it can get into 6th quick. The tune is great it will make it drive significantly better well worth the coin. Atleast for me though where I live it will still gear hunt on the highway just less than stock. I have slightly bigger tires a topper and a small lift which doesn’t help. The real issue is the gearing rpm’s run too low on the highway to keep the 2.7 rolling. I have 5.29 3rd members from ecgs on the way, that combined with a tune I expect it to remedy the gear hunting and super sluggish feel at highway speeds. Highly recommended a tune but don’t expect it to fix all the issues.

ok good to know. i'm thinking of adding quiet a bit of weight so i think the tune will help but it looks like i may need to regear and you have less weight than what i will be going with.

Proper gearing for the tire size and a tune will go a long way towards getting the truck to drive better. There's only so much that can be done with the 2.7L and a double overdrive transmission. I don't want to have you thinking it wont help, but there's no magical magic sauce that's gonna fix the root problem (lack of torque). It's still a challenge with the V6.

Hit the nail on the head i have an LCE header, intake manifold spacer, with light weight 17.4 lb wheels. I tried every bolt on trick in the book before re gearing. They all helped but not enough with the auto trans. The overdrive gears are too tall in 5th and 6th with the stock final drive. A tune to me is a must, helps the trucks shifting significantly. If you live in a state where it’s low speed limits and mostly flat you’re maybe ok. Even with a tune and all of the add ons it’s undriveable at highway speeds to me and I’m not a heavy rig with giant tires I have no steel bumpers, sliders etc. Just some light weight 1 size up AT’s a topper and a small lift. The v6 can get by with a tune if it’s not fully decked out on 35’s but the 2.7 to me even stock needs gears. I can’t wait till mine come in a few weeks to feel the difference they make with the add ons and tune. Get the tune it really does wake the truck up a ton and gas mileage is better but it can only do so much trying to push a 4wd brick at 70 mph with 160hp it needs more rpm and mechanical advantage. It holds 5th way more at highway speeds now with the mods and tune, even over when it was completely stock. It will still constantly do the 4th to 5th dance though.

Not in Tampa proper, but give @RCTuningFL a shout. He’s on the Atlantic side, I’m sure you guys can get something coordinated.
