Wanted to ask the community about rust on new oem brake rotors. I purchased oem rotors some months ago and they’ve been sitting unopened in my garage. I finally got around to installing this morning and noticed rust spots. I called the dealer I ordered from and he said it was “normal”. I applied a little brake clean as suggested by him and rust spot not going away. Please see pics. Is this considered surface rust even if brake clean doesn’t clean away the rust?

Take some brake clean and a scotch bright pad to all the friction contact surfaces. Dry them off and install, it really isnt a problem. A little grease/anti seize on the axle hub where the chamfer mates with the drum for the next time you take them off.

It's probably from storing them in the garage for months since the temps fluctuate more. Rust there is no problem. It will come right off the first time you apply the brakes. I always spray down new rotors with brake cleaner to remove any assembly grease prior to install.

Look at the ones on the truck now the next morning after it rains, you wash it or park it wet.

It's a hunk of raw metal. It's gonna rust.

The pads will clean the swept area. You can clean the others by hand prior to assembly, but you'll be wasting your time.

Yeah, Like others said..no problem there. It's just the fact that when you fork out major bucks for oem you expect it to come wrapped in gold leaf and hear angels singing as you open the box.

After a week of not driving in the PacNW, the rotors on my truck have surface rust...
