I feel like I read somewhere that you shouldn’t hook your winch hook back onto synthetic line. I’ve tried searching but all that pops up in search engines are things about how to permanently attach winch hooks to synthetic line. Mostly of course you’d be hooking to a shackle or recovery point, but does anyone know about a reason to not run the line around something and then hook it back on itself? Thanks

You could cut or tear the rope. Mine has frays even though I'm careful to not let it touch rocks, metal, trees etc. It's rope. It's a bit delicate.

A soft shackle is cheap enough.

I would say that applies to wire rope as well. Too much force/load concentrated in a very small portion of the material. Plus both synthetic and wire rope are designed for the loads to be distributed longitudinal not across the material.

i would also say the bending radius is going to play a part here as well. a hook, or even a soft shackle, is going to bend the line in a tighter radius than a pulley will, which will increase the concentration of force you mention.
