There was one that folks used to buy last year but you can’t buy it from Amazon anymore and it had very mixed reviews.

I’ll have to keep an eye on this thread.

I tried the charger once when I bought the truck and I had to remove a reasonably thin case to get it to work. I sacrificed the button for my CarPlay adapter USB input. I store my sunglasses case in there and I’d love it to be a more dedicated cubby.

Here was my solution back in 2021...

I decided to ditch the charger, but retained the switch (for the future)

    1. Purchased the sr5 cubby
    2. Was very nice to the service staff
    3. Asked if they would substitue my sr5 cubby for the charger (since same labor)
    4. They handed me the new charger
    5. Sold new charger on Ebay for profit.

Me: sr5 cubby installed under warranty. Retained new charger for sale... sold for 345 (700 msrp).

Win-win. They have a happy me, i have a cubby + 345 and no more rediculous, unusable charger.

Nice outcome for you for sure. What was your plan for the switch? I think I’m going to uninstall mine and pop in a blank.

With all the problems with the charger I’m surprised you found someone willing to buy yours. Maybe they were going to use it in a different application.

This is what I did. I removed the pad from the truck to get the rubber of cleanly. The pad is also ALWAYS on (for some reasons that I forget) unless you unplug the harness. So if you do this, unplug the pad as well or else it can bubble the new cover too. It's SO nice having it flat.

After disabling the pad, I repurposed the switch to control my footwell leds:

So currently, if you lift up the aftermarket cover, you see the circucit board of the charger?

I did NOT realize that the charger is still always on with or without the switch...I thought that's the purpose of the switch.

Yes to board. But why would you ever lift up the cover?

And yes to always on - there was another thread on here that covers it, but the charger has like 5 wires going to it, and only 2 are really controlled by the switch.

    No reason, just confirming.

Very interesting. I guess the charger is always on, the switch is to enable the wireless transfer portion so that you could leave your device on the mat but turn the charging of the device on and off at will.

The charger always being on explains why the rubber bubbles even if you never use it. Some people said it's because of transmission heat, which may be true, but there is carpet padding insulation down below and the airbag module is even closer to all that with no trouble. Maybe temps in the car contribute to the bubbling but I imagine the charger always being on is the bigger problem, especially now that I know it functions like that.

Yup that explains it completely. It's always a heat source. Mine was bubbled already when I picked the truck up from the dealer the day it got delivered from Baja.. Just didn't want the dealer in my truck to fix it. I don't like when other people touch my stuff.

I hear ya, my truck would definitely not go to the dealer over any of this. I wonder if the rubber would bubble if I bought a new one and unplugged the charger. I have a feeling I'll like the cubby better as the flat charger version, compared to the slanted SR version, but I really don't know until I try both. I don't really like the aftermarket mat (want to throw it away), so I don't really want to just cut off the rubber and use the mat, but a non bubbled factory rubber piece that isn't bubbled might be nice. I already ordered the SR tray though so unless that order is badly backordered like my first one was, I'll probably try out that option. Maybe if I don't like that then I'll investigate further with a new rubber piece.

Although if you bought your truck new (I don't know if you did?) and it was already bubbled, then the rubber is probably a lost cause, regardless of charger unplugged or not. Or at least, in our hot climates anyways. If you bought your truck used then there is a chance the rubber might be ok if charger is unplugged.

I also thought about doing this, but the dealer wouldn't give me just the part to change myself coz some warranty bs which didn't make sense to me, and they were stupid expensive to buy. The pad should not bubble by itself if there is no board behind it heating it up. I also thought about getting the cubby hole that my coworkers without the charger has, but it actually feels like it has less space than the charger version.

I checked out your build again to see that you ordered your truck, so I'm assuming new. I wonder why yours bubbled before you even had the truck? I can't imagine there were many, if any miles on it when you got it.

What you said about the non charger model having less space is what makes me question whether or not I'll like that choice.

I believe it had 2 miles, and I don't know how, but if there's a part that can fail it will happen to me with minimum effort. And now it can never have the issue again. :)

And yeah, there's just something I don't like about the noncharge option.

Found this while I was looking at doing something different than the rubber cover from Amazon, but I ended up liking the Amazon look the best. I went with the gray trim version to add a little color and play off the rest of the mgm interior pieces I've done, but the black would look almost OEM.

BTW the charger wouldn't actually charge my phone - it would just make it get really hot.

It’s weird, my 18 new, I don’t have any bubble. I have used it a handful of times to realize it’s such a slow useless charge that only gets used as last resort. Other than that the switch light is off all the time. Also in Florida heat/humidity I’d imagine I’d be in the bubble camp, Parked outside (I have used a windshield cover most of the time to block as much heat/interior fading). Not sure how I lucked out on this annoyance especially if it’s heat related, fl sun is just as brutal.

It’s very odd who this affects and who it doesn’t. It’s almost as if the TSB part I have is worse than the one the TSB replaces.

Yeah, mine is a '17 and I can't see any sign of it bubbling up. And it lives in the Texas panhandle summers, pretty brutal sometimes.
