265/70r17 on a 17x9 wheel. What’s the lowest you’d feel safe airing down? Not going to be doing any serious off-roading, mainly rough forest roads. Just doing it for comfort to be honest.

Safe is above single digits going at not douche speeds on forest service roads. I wouldn’t do single digits without beadlocks, period.

If you are going a little faster, like 25 mph or more, then 22 psi- factory spec psi has worked good for me and others I know.

That said, for rocks and sand I would look at 12-20 is a good range to be at.

Do you have plans to air back up after the fire roads?

Fire roads, I do 16psi. Non bead lock wheels.

in the sand, and very rocky areas, I have gone down to 8 psi…no issues, but I’m not speeding

More than likely yes. But if I’m just cruising a national park road after, I probably won’t.

They're asking if you have the ability to air up in the middle of the forest before you hit the highway.

I dropped mine to 20 cold (25-ish hot) and ran it for 5 days. It was a mix of pavement, sand, and this minefield.

Now, it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but also I never exceeded 45 on pavement during those 5 days. If you're going faster than 45, air up. Even at that low speed and that high of a pressure, the tires were as warm as if I was running at 80.

On unimproved Forest service type roads I don't air down at all. You'd have to be on a pretty rough trail to need to do so.

You don't need to but it makes a huge difference to passenger comfort.

    Yes I do

Yeah, had some roads in the Tetons rattle me around pretty good, but I was running 35psi so

I always get nervous air downing too much.. on my 17x9 wheels I aim for around 17/18psi.

I’ve never aired down. I completely understand the idea but have never done it. I overthink most things so having a way to air back up would be my main concern. Second, if you’re doing it for comfort you should probably slow down first. If you slow down you can see most of the hard obstacles. That’s just my opinion and experience.

265 is pretty skinny on a 9" wide wheel. I did it in the psst but never went below 18psi. On a 7" dropping to 10 could be reasonable.
But it's all situational with what your suggesting I would be 18-20 as you can still get some speed going on some of those roads.
