I have a habit of being very easy on doors, hoods, etc., as far as closing and opening. Probably from all the years of buying abused vehicles.:D
Anyway, I noticed something that happens not only on my Tacoma but on my other non Toyota vehicles...if the hood is dropped 'just enough' to fully latch (like a few inch drop), occasionally I'll pull the hood release and it'll feel like the cable is already pulled part way, very little resistance, and the hood pops open with barely a pull.
The secondary catch should provide adequate protection from a hood flying up, but it is a little unnerving.
I've learned to drop the hood from a bit higher up on all of my cars, just to be safe.
I'm sure someone else has had this happen. Kind of wondering if it's the cable return spring, and maybe it pops back to where it should be after a while, or if the latch isn't fully engaged, even though the hood is all the way down.

I've noticed this as well. not sure what causes it.

That said, I've seen my hood shake a bit in windy freeway conditions at speed, so I always shut the hood with confidence so it fully latches. Wouldn't want it to come loose. May not even be possible due to the design but I ain't chancing it

If you’re noticing hood flutter at speed, be sure to adjust the rubber bumpers above the headlights. If the hood shakes enough, it’ll fatigue the sheet metal around the latch and tear itself apart. I’ve repaired a few hoods due to this and it’s not pretty.

Probably doesn’t reset the mechanism for the latch fully despite it being secure.

Anyway, you can still be gentle with the hood, just let it down till it rests on the latch and then a purposeful push closed and it is latched just like if you dropped it from a foot high.

My first car or two didn't have hood release cables or secondary catches. That was a new thing in the mid 70s. Don't know why I worry, come to think of it.:D

Hm good looking out, I'll definitely take a look at this ASAP. luckily my truck doesn't see much use these days but definitely something to take care of.
