I just purchased a '23 Off-road to replace a '22 Sport that was totaled two weeks ago.
When I start the truck on a hill, the truck makes a loud ticking sound and the
The '22 Sport did not roll back at all on hills when in drive. The 23' off road Does roll backwards on hills while in drive, and as I give it gas it makes the noise.
Dealership says this is normal, but doesn't know why or explain the difference between the '22 Sport and '23 OR.
My guess is that this is the hill start assist. Is this sound / rolling back normal? Does anyone know why the '22 Sport does not roll back or make a sound while the '23 OR does?

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Normal. It is the hill assist control. Normally a light will flash on the dash when it rolls backwards on a hill and the ticking sound.

I am off road a lot on steep hills, and hear it several times per trip. Goofy, but normal for the Off Road which I also drive.

The truck will also do this automatically if you start rolling back with the truck in drive. Normal. It’s actually a good feature once you get used to it. It’s prevented me from rolling back a couple time when I wasn’t paying attention.

The electronic brake booster on the Off Road is totally different than the one they fit to the Sport, hence the different response and features.

Thanks for the responses. Any tips to avoid triggering the noise / abs engagement?

use two feet or the parking brake when encountering a rollback situation.
again, it's not going to hurt anything, I'd just two-foot it, or turn up the tunes

I believe the TRDOR uses a slightly different brake system than the Sport which is more electronic based. This may explain why you didn't have the same symptoms with the Sport. The TRDOR will have more electronic components due to crawl control (assuming automatic transmission of course) and an electronic brake booster.

Funny, this just happened to me in my driveway and it freaked me out. Thought something was going on with the transmission or torque converter. Google calmed me down.

Thanks everyone. I now understand that the noise is ABS trying to help. I’ve been using the parking brake, and that’s eliminated the startling abs racket.
