My 05 Tacoma TRD off road has been making a growling noise from the rearend. My transmission guy confirmed what I had thought: rearend is wasted. So I'm looking for a used rearend for it, but the ones with the electronic locker are a) hard to find, and b) outrageous. Like $2400. The regular 3.73 rearends I find are $300 to $1000.
So after some research, I figured out A04B is the 3.73 with electronic locker (what I have), A04A is 3.73 with open diff, and A04C is 3.73 with limited slip. My 15 and 19 tacomas both had the electronic locker and I never used it in either one. I'm off road a lot cause I'm a forester, use 4wd occasionally, but it's muddy fields, log decks, woods paths, and beach driving. As far as I'm concerned, the locking rear is useless.
Based on this, I don't have any problem with going to a limited slip or even an open diff, but I don't want to spend a thousand bucks on a new rearend and then have it throw a code and it not go into 4wd or disable the ABS or something. When you just go unplugging stuff, strange things can happen.
So there's 2 plugs going into the rearend. I unplugged both of them, and the ABS light came on, but it still went into 4WD hi and lo both. I plugged one of them back in, ABS light goes off, and it still goes into 4WD hi and lo ok. So I figure one plug is the ABS wires and the other is for the locker. (You cant really tell where the wires go though because both wire sets disappear into a wiring harness on both ends connected to god knows what.)
I feel like a regular diff will work. Anybody know for sure?

If I was further along on my axle swap I’d offer you mine for free (as long as I don’t have to ship it). Unfortunately I’m still gathering parts for it, hopefully someone further along in a swap will see this and offer you theirs.

If you were closer I'd make you a deal on an e-locker I have.
