I'm trying to help my dad sort out some preventive repairs on his 2006 TRD Off Road. I've got him a set of shocks from the market place here.

We're in the midwest so the rust is inevitable. I bought this truck to use while I fixed mine and now that it's his, we'd like to fix her up and keep her good.

I know there is a conversation to be had about undercoating in the midwest. I'm sure we'll have that conversation later.

But first, I noticed this spot on the rear passenger side. It's not wet to the touch. I was concerned. We've got an apt to take it to the shop this Friday but I thought I see what people up here think this might be from.

The whole housing is pretty crusty. What's the best fix here?

Sand and re-paint/New seals? (seems like it might be past that)

East Coast Gear Supply upgrade? (we really don't do any regular wheeling, I'm leaning towards keeping it stock)

Used junk yard salvaged - 2nd or 3rd gen?? what years can I consider?

Here is a helpful thread I found
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2005-2016-tacoma-axle-codes.408019/

What I've gathered so far is I have a 3.73 ratio ELocker here so A04B I think I can confirm on my sticker. 71684545193__0EB6B9A5-F181-4914-B25A-B0496A212925.jpg

    Thanks for any suggestions.

IF the frame is still solid enough to be safe you have a couple of choices IMHO

    1) Sell it with good conscience at a fair price.

    2) spend a lot of time and a fair amount of $ on materials (and maybe tools) to bring it up to snuff and preserve it.

#2 could make a great father son project if that's the kind of work you'd both enjoy.

Frame was replaced. No rust holes just rusty welds. I was told the leaf springs were replaced too but they look pretty terrible.

I replaced the rear hitch and cleaned this area up a little bit IMG_1910.jpg IMG_1901.jpg

First guess is leaking axle seals. Pull the drum. If the seals are leaking, the inside will be a lot worse.
