How does dust ingress through a sealed off fill tube? Not being a smartass, happy to admit fault if it’s proven. Just don’t want a continued issue after a $7k fix, the amount of dirt they mention doesn’t appear to be a one time single fleck. It seems to be a continued issue.

I don’t disagree with the filter. I wonder how many issues have to occur at dealerships before a TSB would be released.

probably would void my warranty, but that doesn’t seem to be doing me any good anyway!

There’s alway the possibility of vandalism.

Years back when we had gone to E10 here I saw a few Ram trucks where the inside of the fuel line corroded and it wound up as particles in the fuel rail and into the injector inlets. It looked like fine sand but closer inspection revealed it was rust. I went looking for the source and found the fuel lines rusted.

Have you ever looked at the filler nozzle? I've had to wipe caked on dirt off the spring lol. But where I get gas normally, tractors get gas, boats get gas, mowers get gas.

I don’t routinely pay attention to it, I fill up in the city. Not a setting that makes me think of contaminants on the fuel pump. It’s a gas only station, no diesel pumps. Been filling up at the same location for almost 7 years with no issues to my knowledge.

I drive my vehicle in dusty environments, which is why my thoughts lean towards that. The other vehicles with reported issues drive in similar conditions. Always click the cap once knowing where I’m going to be taking my vehicle. I’ve been proactive in my mind.

Quite a few. This is the first time I've heard of this issue, which tells me it isn't likely a manufacturer issue. There's something else that needs to be looked into though.

Only reason I am saying anything is yours is the first case I have read about. Most mechanics and techs know the importance of fuel system cleanliness.

I can understand the logic, but I guess these issues have to start somewhere. Dealer was happy to let folks with the same issue pay the $7k repair bill and go on about their business without actually finding its cause.

I would imagine other have been unwilling to ask questions and just take their word for it. I was lied to about my warranty coverage on my fuel pump until I reached out to Toyota originally which led me to research myself.

A TSB has to start somewhere, I’m fine with being the ignition point.

I doubt a gas station would admit to having dirt, water or other shit in their gas. It has to come from there, unless there is a vandal as mentioned earlier.

People ask things that are much sillier than dirt in the fuel lines on here all the time. I highly doubt that this would have not been brought up a lot more if it was a common issue given that the truck has been in production since 2016. People aren't just blindly paying the repair bill and not ever mentioning it here. This is a non-issue as far as production and it being anywhere close to common is concerned. Based on the information you've given, it sounds like something more specific to your area and not even necessarily just Toyota. If the system is sealed, as it is supposed to be, the only way you'd get dirt in is through the fuel tank. Otherwise you're going to throw a code or you'll know you have a leak as you'd be smelling fuel and likely see evidence of it.

I appreciate the response, I’m no mechanic, just looking to see if anyone outside of my area has experienced the issues.

Currently I’m driving my truck, not fixed. It’s struggles to start and dirt is still in my system and has not been cleaned out at the moment. I smell fuel after a long struggled start. They were able to make my CEL go off which makes no sense due to nothing being fixed. Leads me to believe that if there is a leak or issue somewhere along the line that isn’t allowing fuel out but allowing dust in then there could be a problem. Not sure how the CEL is not going crazy throughout this process. So the chances that some issues with the evap/air breather lines may be happening. It’s tough to follow the lines without dropping the tank, which I’m not equipped to do.

Like I said, the EVAP system is incredibly sensitive so it'll throw a code if it detects a leak large enough for dirt to get inside. They likely cleared your codes to see if they return. That or they unhooked the battery which would have reset the codes as a byproduct. The only way dirt would get in and fuel not get out is if it was intentionally (or accidentally) introduced to the system. The most likely cause would be that it got in via the fuel filler neck.

I had a fuel leak caused by some major repairs I had done by the dealership. They swapped out the bad parts. Through this I never had dirt enter the system and was very aware there was a fuel leak due to the smell even though I couldn't immediately tell where it had come from. This is how I know you'd be smelling fuel if there was any sort of fuel leak.

Every time I fuel up at the pump, dust billows out of one of these two holes. It is coming from them no doubt. I wipe off the area prior to fueling every time. I assume they are air breather for the tank and something related to evap or over filled neck.

It comes out as a noticeable cloud, sometimes you can even see a dust cloud from below the truck.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. If there was a leak, you'd get a code indicating it. EVAP systems can throw a code for a leak as tiny as .02" or .5mm. It's also possible the dirt is already in your tank and circulating from even before your ownership and is slowly making its way out.

Like I also suggested, pop in your own fuel filter. It can't hurt and is actually recommended if you do any international travel in any vehicle as fuel quality isn't the same everywhere.
