Rebuilding Xfer Case VS Buying Used Or Rebuilt

Quick Question, BIL has a nice older 4 runner and his Xfer case is leaking badly and isn't going into 4wd. He asked if I knew any decent local places that rebuilt them and I don't but myself, I'd likely go for a rebuild or find a good yard take out.
I've done old FJ40 Xfer case rebuilds way in the past and still have a 205 floating around but never cracked the case of a 2000's era 4 runner.
Can a decent transmission shop rebuild one at a reasonable price or is it better to go with a ship and drop in x fer case?

 

What is BIL?

What year 4Runner? It matters.

 

BIL=Brother In Law

 

If it isn't going into 4wd, there may be major mechanical problems with it. i had it happen to my 99' with the multi mode t-case back in the day, we had to replace it with a good used unit.
