    Ditto!

I have have my old Hitachi on a bench and looked at some options, none appealed to me - plus this is just an old school saw, may upgrade and want to buy once for future saw.

I can't quite tell from your picture, but the general answer to your question is to lay the stone on a bed of mortar.

Gas fires don't hiss and pop and throw sparks, so in theory, you're probably safe there. But, you don't want to burn your house down. And, I'm sure an inspector wouldn't approve either.

Maybe not the best picture to help, but maybe you can tell. I think a bed of mortar would solve the issue well enough for something to lay flat. Would just have to figure out what kind of framing and such I’d need to build up to that point to support a stone. My wife said she might even like someone to do a nice polished concrete slab there.

It looks like you use the fireplace so a hearth is probably a good idea. One of the houses we owned the insurance company (inspector when we moved in) required us to extend the hearth since we had a carpeted floor.

Yeah I definitely wouldn’t want to fail an inspection. I’m leaning more towards a ground level type hearth now like was suggested. Maybe a few inches high or so like a “step” of sorts but nothing more than that.

DIY and home hobby basically. Long story short we bought a new house last year. I’ll build or have a good size external garage and shop built in a few years at which point I’ll have a miter saw station built in permanent but until then I want a bit nicer and easier way to use my miter saw and move it around some.

Rigid or Kobalt both make a decent 10" Sliding Miter Saw and stands.

Most pros I know are running Dewalt, Makita, Bosch, Milwaukee or Metabo/Hitachi.

A little elaborate... but this is what I run... The cart is on casters, easily moves outside, the flaps fold away for better storage... Have bucket shop vac in the base on the right side (other side houses tools while not in use, drawer houses blades, squares, angle finders, etc...). You can easily get a gadget on Amazon to turn the vacuum on when the saw starts up.
    upload_2023-10-13_13-43-5.png

The angled metal supports have adjustment at the end to extend / retract to get the flaps perfectly level to the mitre saw base.

I gotta add some track and stops, etc.. but it's served me very well through my home reno (got the keys in Feb).

When I did mine the hearth dimensions were indicated by the fireplace manufacturer. Granted I did word burning but I'd start there and see what that points to. It was super specific in my case.

Yeah I might get a quote or two from some fireplace companies in town, because I would like a new gas insert anyways. Just see what all they say.

    Good put though, thank you.

DeWalts stands suck. They don't last more then 2 years if you actually use them.

Bosch GTA3800 is worth a look.

I won't say this is the best stand but it the best I've used. Going on 6 years of use at least a few times a week. Sometimes daily for weeks on end. If this one ever gives out I'm buying another. That's how good I think it is. The extension is enough cut 16' boards easily. 20's take a little force to keep in place but a roller stand solves that if you need to cut 20's. Which I do often. The locking mechanisms and stops do not move once set. Folding is easy. My only real gripe is the wheels are kind of a joke. I thought about getting larger ones but ended up just removing them completely to make it easier to fit in my work truck.

That's definitely a nice stand. I picked up a Metabo not too long ago to mount my 8 1/2" slider to. Seems well built and a different style than the Dewalt and Milwaukee stands. Only used it a few times, so time will tell.

We're completing our electrical rough ins , heat pump line sets , HRV venting , propane etc

There is a legal secondary suite in the basement where we need to conform to fire separation and sound transfer code requirements

As part of the sound control portion of our floor assembly we are using Sonopan directly to the underside of the joists followed by res bar and 2 layers of 5/8" Type X drywall

In order to have a continuous layer of Sonopan we installed shallow plywood boxes where all our wafer lights will go that are lined with Sonopan . (The electricians will leave their wire in these boxes prior to drywall) The entire ceiling then gets a layer of Sonopan right over our shallow boxes . After drywalling the lights get cut in with a hole saw and the drivers will live up in the shallow box and we have a continuous Sonopan layer around the light penetrations

We're using these cool Fire rated no-box wafer lights I've never used before that become a continuation of our fire separation layer . They are also colour temperature selectable on the driver

I installed about 4 dozen of that type of LED pancake light when I remodeled my condo. Color temperature selection is awesome. Are those dimmable? The literature doesn’t mention it & that’s been the best thing ever for me. Very rarely are mine at 100% :welder:

It also doesn’t indicate if the driver boxes are able to be daisy chained? Mine came with 4 slot Wago connectors so it was easy to distribute power in the grouping.

Shitty fisheye phone pic for temp comparisons.
    IMG_8273.jpg

I went with 5k for kitchen & bathrooms, 4k for everything else.
