Does anyone have the section of the shop manual for assembly and disassebly of the rear axle housing I.m in need of that info to access whether I should just try to get a new cover plate and have it welded or purchace a new housing assembly I been thinking of going the new assembly route since everything back there is pretty rusted. Already have replaced a bit do to rust, sad it's a nice truck but it's falling apart Thanks

Workshop manuals dot com, tacomaworld posted FSM, or buy FSM.
    There’s DIYs and YouTube videos.

dont know what you mean by cover plate. There’s a third member that bolts to the housing with gasket or gasket maker.

the cover plate ( as I called it) is the welded on piece with the fill bolt at the back of the axle housing that has a few pin holes in it and its leaking

If you have rust there Soo bad it's leaking.... I wouldn't trust the rest of the axle. (Or truck for that matter)

    Doubt that’s an available part.

I feel like I’ve seen this before if it’s the welded on section part of a housing where people will fix it by doing the following.

clean and re evaluate to determine the exact source of the leak
    Grind a bit
    Prep for weld
Weld, either yourself or pay a welder
    Paint, potentially some filler
Or slap JB weld on it

that or replace the whole thing.
I happen to have a spare axle housing but it’s in SoCal and 5-lug SUA.

It’s not a separate part and not something that would be shown in the repair manual.

Thanks all for your replies the major parts like the frame was replaced by Toyota a couple of years back.
I've looked at Toyota parts and can order a new rears axle they call it (housing assembly rear axl ) what I'm trying to figure outis how much work will it be to strip out the old axle, I think from what I can find on-line is the bearings come out complete with the drive axles and I might only need to replace the seals. I can also purchase a new cover grind off the old and have it welded but I'm wonder how good is the rest of the axle TT the JB weld is the first option to buy a couple of months to get the parts together also thanks but I've got a 6 lug and live in Ma. Thoughts

Would buying a whole used axle assemble be an option?

That would be fairly easy to swap.

In my area a used one would most likely not be in much better shape plus I only have 90k miles on mine. Ma uses salt on the roads in winter and it just kills everything.
Plus the ones I saw are almost the same price as new housing. Just finished the first coat of JB weld on the spots

Assuming you have a 2WD, what you're looking for is:

    42110-04092 - Housing, Rear Axle
42181-34011 - Gasket, Differential Housing to Axle Housing
90310-58003 - Oil Seal, Axle Shaft to Axle Housing; Qty: 2
90301-83002 - O-Ring, Wheel Bearing to Axle Housing, Qty: 2
    12157-10010 - Gasket, Oil Plugs; Qty: 2
    90930-A3001 - Breather, Axle Housing

You'd maybe want some additional items like brake lines, bolts, and/or nuts, but you'd need to judge that for yourself.

Did you resolve your problem yet? I had the same problem on a 2001 Tacoma. I fixed it temporarily with JB weld and it is working fine....it will hold up I am sure until spring and then I will replace the axle housing and brake lines ect. My third member was leaking so I purchased a used one off of Ebay. I want to replace everything back there and paint it with Chassis Saver coating.

I purchased an axle housing from some guy in Arizona on Ebay.$420 shipped. Totally rust free except for a little inside the axle tubes that I cleaned out with a 2.5" dia. brush spun by a cordless drill. I still sand blasted the paint off with a Harbor Freight spot blaster to get the surface texture required for the Chassis Saver finish. I am waiting for 60* weather next week to paint it with a brush. I got new backing plates and all new Jap bearings and seals. Also I noticed my brake lines were corroding and my parking brakes are rusted/inoperable so that might be the biggest problem! I purchased new nickle/copper brake lines and stainless steel nuts. You can find most of what you are looking for on Ebay. Good luck and most importantly have fun bringing it back to life!
