With heavy hearts, we’ve decided to skip TacomaWorld’s Secret Santa event for 2023. This is not a permanent closure of the event as of right now, just skipping a year. Times are hard for people, life is expensive right now. We’ve seen simple expenses skyrocket and we can only imagine the impact it’s having on some of our members. We encourage our members that aren’t feeling the pinch to consider donating to local charities. Consider buying food or toys for your local animal shelter, donating food to the local food pantry, asking domestic violence shelters what needs they may have, participating in a local toy drive, or something similar. TW members are typically very giving and we’d love to see some efforts pushed to your local communities if you have the ability to give. Feel free to use this thread to post your efforts, we all need to feel warm and fuzzy sometimes.

Please be mindful who you donate to, do your research. Typically you can check your state’s Secretary of State website to see if an organization has a 501(c)3 status. We hope you understand and bless others if you are able.

First things first, exactly. Besides the general reasons, it's been a tough year in my house due to my wife sustaining long term (might be permanent) injuries in a car accident Christmas week 2022.

Dang I was looking forward to this! Always fun to send strangers a gift but totally understand it’s been a tough year. Fellow TW member and close neighbor to me @crashngiggles gave me a friendly reminder that I’m in a lucky situation being a DICWAD. Dual income couple with a dog is obviously what he meant

Will certainly donate a little heavier to my local charities this year! Thanks for all the hard work in years past

Something fun that I’ve participated in in the past is the local Big Brother Big Sisters Christmas party. They have a huge blow out party for all of the kids, Santa of course makes an appearance and local businesses and individuals “adopt” a kid and buy presents that are then given out at the party. The parent of the kid helps make the wishlist, items totaling $100 is the limit. You can spend more but they try to keep it at $100 per kid. My employer has adopted 20 kids each year and we all go on a shopping spree. Man…. To see the mountain of presents that we’ve amassed in years past. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall and watched the kids faces as they walked in to see all of that waiting for them at the party!
So anywho… just another suggestion for something awesome someone can do in the spirit of secret Santa

Love this idea. It's easy to forget some children get little or nothing at this time of year

And since nearly every BBBS kid is from a single parent home you know that budgets are tight.
Check with your local BBBS and see what they do, maybe this is just what my local chapter does but it’s awesome!

The logistics and weeding out they have to do is a lot. I shouldn't be on that list but appreciate the tag

Arizona allows an $800 tax credit off of your state income tax (for married couples). We set up an auto bill pay to go to Fire Fighter Charities so we can give a little all year long without having to write a giant check. AND it was money we were going to give up any way so I'd rather hand it to Fire Fighter Charities than give it to the government to create more laws that I can't stand. At least this way I know that it is going directly to people in their darkest hour when they have had a significant loss or for some community outreach to keep them from having a loss in the first place.

If you are looking for a place to make a donation - even a small one - I can't say enough good things for FFC.

Totally understandable for this. Sad things have gotten expensive in many ways. TWSS had been a great way to get to know others on here. Hoping things get better for us all sooner rather than later.

Thank you to those that take on the monstrous taste of being the Elves each year.
