So today I was checking my air filter & noticed this on the cover of the air box above the air filter. Is this some type of cloth mesh filter that comes out? It looks like it’s attached to the cover but I’m not sure. I’ve had this truck 2 years and never noticed it until today… anyone know what it is for?? I have the 2.7.

It's a standard filter..possibly charcoal for epa / emissions etc..something to do with gasoline fumes when you shut off the engine maybe..don't remember exactly but that's basically the story..some people take it out to increase air flow but I do remember people saying you could fail a testing certification if they noticed it removed..via visual or thru test equipment I'm not sure..

It’s a carbon filter for the EVAP system. It is supposed to absorb gasoline fumes when the truck purges the gas vapor from the EVAP canisters into the intake to be burned.
You will never need to replace it if you buy good quality air filters and change them regularly. I see yours is a Denso. Denso is good. Keep up the good work on maintenance

    Basically, it’s not hurting anything.
    Leave it in there.
