Any woodworkers?

I think I’m going to make a jewelry box out of it with a Purple Heart top and bottom.

 

Last coat on the last two finally, this has taken way too long!

 

Finishing can easily take longer than the building.

 

lol i have to stop building in the summer cause even with my window unit and attic fan my shop won’t get below 90 degrees and I ain’t working in that

getting back on it this week though. I’ve got a cigar table I started in the spring that I need to get done

 

Question for ya'll.

This is the first piece I'm trying with any kind of detail. I scraped and sanded off the fake stuff on top of this dresser. Having never done this before I'm not sure how to get the corner and small nooks.

Is this something a stripper would take off? Haven't used thar stuff before so I don't know much about it. I'd like to retain as much of the molding as I can. Though with a break in the top molding I may try to redo just the top edge molding.

Thoughts?

these profile sanding blocks then you can use whatever sand paper you want to fit along contours and odd profiles. Alternatively, you can pick up a RAT (Mouse sander) with a pointed sanding block to get into those tight corners. This is basically just another type of RoS but without the rotation bit. If you're doing a lot of sanding, I recommend padded palms. Your arm will tingle for a long time afterwards, at least mine does.

Edit: for the round profiles, cut long thin strips of sand paper like 1/2 in wide, 8 in long and wrap it around. Wrap the ends around some dowel stock to aid in gripping and you can sort of "floss" around rounded leg profiles.

Stripper should dissolve the finish. Make sure to read and follow the directions carefully - that stuff can be nasty.

There are several grades of stripper - I think there is also a water-based one. You don't want/need a stripper that will remove paint on aircraft.

Obviously, use this stuff outside.

You might want to try a sample piece before using it on your work piece.

 

I refinished antique furniture for about 2 years when I was younger, if it’s just the corners, if you’re good with a sharp chisel, you can make any other method easier or maybe even unnecessary..

For the feet, I would use a wire brush / scraper regardless to break all that stuff up, and then use a little stripper to get the hard stuff.

After all the time spent refinishing, I use chemical strippers as a last resort.

"Mouse sanders" work, but as warned the vibrations are funky. Worse on a random-orbit sander, but random-orbits work for large/flat.

Rounded surfaces also can use "spokeshavers", named so because their origins go back to wagon-wheel makers. Woodcraft and other wood-working supply store carry them:

Strippers can overpower with fumes ... take time to breathe away from them during use. Round-surface sanding is cheaper with sandpaper as well, so the spoke-shaver is just a thought.

 

I got shop time yesterday! I got all the ash for the top jointed on 2 sides.
I also got the walnut for the top cut to size and ready to run through the jointer.

Filled the dust collector drum again and had to empty it. That's 2 drums so far just for this project and I have aging to do yet, lol. Hopefully I'll get more shop time today and start planing the stock.

Today's progress on the new workbench.
I started by jointing the walnut on 2 sides.
Then I set up the planer to finish dimensioning the lumber.

Checking For level and flatness on the planer table.

I shimmed it up and clamped on end to the table and duct taped the other end to the saw fence.

I used a roller stand on the outfeed side.

All the lumber is now dimensioned on 3 sides.

The walnut finished up at 15/16" It's nice stuff, some has some figure in it but you won't see most of it when it's glued up.

The ash is random thicknesses from 1 1/2" to 2" I just planned it until the rough sawn surface was smooth. I'm trying to save as much thickness as I can.

and I almost filled the dust collector again.

Man I just loved the smell of walnut when it's worked. Another cool thing about this project is I chainsaw milled all the lumber, it's basicly free, just my labor was the cost and some bar oil and gas.
I'm now ready to start some glue ups............

 

Got to play on a sawmill for the first time over the weekend, making some lumber to build a shooting house for hunting. Man was it fun! Its truly amazing how much you can get out of just a 8' and 16' section of a pine tree. We ripped up a whole trailer load of 2x14"x16', 2x8x8, 2x4x8, and some 6x6x8 corner posts. Thinking this shooting house is gonna be beefy enough to last for many years to come!

 

Went and grabbed some walnut slabs I've had air drying for a few years. Put the taco to work today. Then cut up the slabs into workable widths. Gonna make a bed and nightstands for myself. Got a lot of milling ahead of me!

 

I wanna do that some day too!

 

Very cool, that's how I use lumber also. Walnut smells great when it's processed in the shop!

 

Yeah I am finally making time for a ME project. I'll feel like a real grown up once I have a actual bed and nightstand! Hahaha
