Depends what you want the dash cam for. If it's to video your adventures, that's one thing. If it's for insurance purposes, I would watch this video.

The Garmin does come with a cable and it does work but it's a bit long. I would try and find a 1.5' to 2" cable to use instead.

Any current recs? Been meaning to get one and keep putting it off. My biggest thing is being able to read license plates and those sort of details.

    Anyone try the Vantrue E2?
Vantrue E2 Dash Cam Front and Rear with Voice Control, 2.7K + 2.7K Dual Dash Camera for Cars, WiFi, GPS, STARVIS Night Vision, Buffered Parking Mode, G-Sensor, 2.45" IPS, 160°, WDR, Support 512GB https://a.co/d/1AMu9jn

Almost got in an accident today when some jack wagon in red Mustang decided to try and blow past the off ramp line and cut in front of me while i was still going about 60. was 2 feet from nailing his rear bumper and sending him flying into a guard rail.
Idk whats up with people, but I feel like drivers have gotten 100x more aggressive post covid and I've narrowly avoided several accidents in the past few years and been hit once.

Probably still recommend Garmin Mini 2
Have 2 (front and rear) and use the OBD constant power for them, used for 2 years now, brought over from old car
Reliable and records everything needed, big sell is the app is actually functional and Garmin is big name

Still happy with my FitcamX. Using code CAM566 gets you 6% off if you order directly from them.

I like the NextBase 522. Years ago I tried the Garmin dashcam, but found flaws in it.

First, it took too much time to spool up, like the GPS units. Spoolup time is OK with a unit not needed until you are actively on road, but in a dsahcam the legal warnings take too much time.

Second, it had one default setting for "tolerance detecting a crash" which gave me 10 "crashes" in a 10 miles stretch of bad freeway.

Perhaps they have fixed those now.

The 522 has a permanent base on the windshield that the unit can detach from to make the windshield effectively "flat". Also have add-ons for rear-view behind vehicle and read-view inside car (parents, UBER, etc).

Will have to try the rewerview-mirror adapter, though. I suspect the "standard" plugs make it compatible, but cannot confirm.

LTT goes way deep on these things and I do not disagree with his ire at manufactures making dash cams that cannot even read a license plate... but that has nothing to do with an insurance claim. If the police were looking to find who hit you: absolutely. You would want a camera that can read a license plate. If you were looking to sue whomever hit you: absolutely. Insurance companies and the fuzz like dashcams because it is a silent observer. This helps them with establishing fault and helps the insurance company decide if they will cover a claim.

I would absolutely not use it for documenting my adventures as a GoPro is better suited to that. I would use it to document my driving if I lived in the city or a populated rural area since it is a silent witness. Go to any of your favorite off road YouTubers and see how many of them are documenting their adventures on a dash cam.

After looking at the video where he mentioned GoPro I tried out my GoPro 8 as a dashcam - I only use the GoPro occasionally on trail rides and when I do it's mounted outboard but I was curious if it could have two uses so I used a never used windshield mount. I took a snap shot from a short video and I am not sure it is really any better than even the best dashcams that cost a lot less. This was taken when it was overcast and very light rain.

I am not really expert with pics but I tried blowing it up some to see if I could get a clear license plate number but that just made them more blurry and harder to read. But maybe really good photo editing software and a competent person who knows what they are doing could do better.

Good catch - that is the video I was referring to - somehow I thought I saw it in this thread but went back and realized it wasn't - my bad on that.

Yeah...Linus Tech tips have been around forever...but he really does a good nuts and bolts job on the dash cams all being essentially the same.
