PSA/Rant, Late Merging

PSA: This is the way, people! The attached link provides a wonderful explanation. I'll add one point that isn't specifically mentioned. When someone merges into a lane, there WILL be a "shock wave", no matter how carefully and politely they tried to merge. One person merging at a time isn't a big deal, very easy for drivers upstream to deal with.. when multiple merge at the same time in different locations, however, the shock wave adds up and the poor people at the back are going to have a harder time dealing with it, perhaps even having to get on their brakes or come to a complete stop--NOT SAFE!

There are a few cases where this rule does not apply, but those are the exception, not the rule.


Rant: I found myself in this situation today, the single file line of cars was stacked up for a mile in the left lane. The right lane was completely clear. With a heart full of dread, knowing that I was about to cause inexplicable road rage and draw the ire and contempt of hundreds of people, I carefully proceeded in the right lane to the very end. Even before I attempted to merge, I was met by someone giving me a 4-second horn and they gunned it to get one foot away from the bumper in front of them--What a petulant child!! The lady behind this moron let me in, but made sure to give me a number of hand gestures that are universally understood. I'd like to say I didn't let it get to me, but here I am on the internet posting about it as if the affirmation of strangers is important to me

The problem is that people don't think, they feel. They FEEL its not fair that they waited 10 minutes in line and I didn't. Well, they didn't have to.. the right lane was available for EVERYONE, including them. Furthermore, they SHOULD HAVE used the right lane. I think that's why this kind of behavior irks me so much; people tend to become angry and indignant about things they know the least about and this is common in all aspects of life, not just driving.
