finally got to use my flail a couple of weekends ago. It ran perfect. I need to learn how to set it up as I have no idea on that yet.

I also need to fab up a belt guard as limbs threw the belt twice, once just off the pulley and it was hanging on the shaft, and the second time it popped it clean off and I had to backtrack and find it. Super weird thing I noticed almost immediately was that the flail never, ever bogs like my deck mowers will. Set the RPM on the motor, and that is what she does. So when the belt fell off, there was no noticeable RPM change to let me know.

Kinda wild to mow over tree limbs as well. I avoided stumps, but one big limb couldn't be avoided, it sounds like you are mowing pop cans when the blades are deflecting off of stuff lol as the knives go everywhere.

    PXL_20231001_145941109.jpg

I had to flush the coolant before usage as it was super due for a change. Amazing the brass shut off valve didn't break off as that was my big concern. Tractor runs like a top.

    PXL_20231001_152427220.jpg

I was going to do a comparison between the 2 mowers, but honestly, after about 2 minutes with the flail, I knew it was over. I'll keep this old deck mower as it is only 42" or so so it fits between trees well, but it will become my back up mower.

Honestly, the only drawback to it I found is that it struggles with tall things that have a weak stalk as they like to just fold over. Since the flail is only like 2' wide at that, they just lay down and you go right over it. I felt like there were times when the deck mower would have gotten things the flail missed just due to the width of the deck. Again though, I made no adjustments to the flail and other than the 3 point lifting or lowering the front. I mowed with the height on the wheels as high as it would go and the anti-scalp roller as low as it would go. I probably will move both towards the middle and see if it goes better. The flail knives were roughly 5" or so from the ground, so very high.

Also, I have no idea on how the deck should be tilted, but I did notice if pointing down, it just skipped mowing anything. Tilted up, it rode on the roller and cut almost everything.

But get one, it really is amazing how it just never ever bogs or changes speed, no matter what you are cutting. I just could not believe it. It really did make the mowing experience much more enjoyable. Crazy easy to service as well.

I will say that my freshly sharpened knives chopped through everything, it really likes briars which is great for me. Did not handle saplings though as I expected.

how do you fellas feel the market for these tools will be in the near future? not everyone needs equipment like this in the age of electric is good. prices hold? go way up? or drop for a different option? im hoping stuff like this stays available. like who mows 2 acres with an electric unit?

Honestly, I think there will be a giant hole in availability of stuff. Since most newer things are plastic or electronic heavy, I don't see a lot of the stuff made today being around long term like the stuff I currently buy.

Either it will be really old, or brand new basically. Or both, like a Ford E9n. Or i9n if you prefer that.

I feel like the market will hold good for older stuff, parts seem available for most of it. My son still mows with his J.D. mower from the 1960's, none of the current mowers will be around in 60+ years, I don't think.

I don't want to know what you paid for this as it's none of my business. I look on marketplace and c-list and find a bunch of overpriced garbage or the engine is 16hp if the price is right :annoyed:
