My random orbital sander started sounding like it was about to come apart the other day, then started stopping intermittently. It also left a ton of swirl marks in this tv stand top. I thought I had hand sanded them out, guess not. I guess I need better lighting in the garage and a new sander.

If you were to buy a new sander, would you get a random orbital sander or a 1/4 sheet sander?

I Iike random orbital. Gives a better result and far less swirls. It is a bit tough on edges but big flats like that is perfect

Finished our dining table after like 2 years. I don’t have time to dedicate to do these honey-do side projects, so I have to chip away at it over time.

Using the folding chairs to get an idea of how two chairs will fit, which should be the last thing for this.

I just bought one a few months ago and have zero regrets. I really like not having my hand buzz when I finish sanding and how well it works with their dust extractor.

In fact, I liked the first few Festool products that I bought so much that I just got a TS-60 track saw a few days ago. Unfortunately, I have not had an opportunity to use it yet.

Swirlmarks suck. I've always found that I get swirlmarks when I don't clean the surface AND the sanding disk. I blow off or use a rubber sander cleaner to remove larger bits of abrasive from the sanding disk . Especially at thr low grits like 80 and 120. Also good sandpaper matters too. I use 3M cubitron Xtract and I love it. Great dust extraction.
If your looking for a great sander, and don't wanna pay festool prices, I highly recommend the Bosch GET75. I've had mine for 4 years and it's a workhorse.

Pick yourself up a TSO tracksaw square now. It's great and makes very accurate 90degree cuts. I use mine almost everyday.

You can also get an eraser. It works amazing for cleaning sandpaper and takes seconds to use. They come in different sizes. I think the one I bought is about the length of the one below but twice as wide.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
A few rules of sanding to eliminate swirl markers.
    • sand up through the grits to 220
    • your movement should be no faster than 1 inch per second.
    • clean sanding media
    • never apply more weight (pressure) than the weight of your sander and resting hand
They refinished the men's room door at work. Swirls every where. I cringe every time I look at the door.

A little more progress on the bench top glue ups.
I got the 3rd one out of the clamps, flipped it and scraped off the glue drips. Used my favorite Stanley scraper for that. I don't know why they quit making these, they work excellent.
    20231019_194041.jpg
Then I got 2 halves glued up and in the clamps. This makes one 12" section. I need 2 more

Sander ran fine today, only stopped once. However, I did switch back to Diablo sanding discs. All swirl marks are gone. The supervisor said it was fine, but I knew if I didn’t fix it now I would later. I still take pride in most of the things I work on. The cheap Amazon discs I was using must of had one piece of grit higher than the rest. Lesson learned, again, sometimes cheaper discs are not as good.
