Starting at 90,000 miles, for 10's of thousands of miles, I thought I had worn synchros. It was "tender" going onto 5th and 1st. Sort of needed to "match speeds" when going into 5th.

I planned to just live with it.

Then, the transmission started to pop out of 5th. About 100 miles later, it started to pop out of 3rd.

Then, I needed to have my hand on the shifter in all gears.

Finally, a friend discovered this post:

    https://www.instructables.com/Toyota-Tacoma-manual-transmission-pop-out-of-gear/

Replacing the shifter seat seems like a well-known solution for the pops-out problem. For me, it also solved what I thought was a synchro problem.

If you need to do this, read all the comments attached to the instructables post...the comments include help for removing the retainer cap...which can be tougher than the original post, and the FSM, suggest.

Thanks, saving this as well. My '96 has 416,000 miles and no trans issues at all so far, but expect they will show up at some point. They don't last forever do they. ;)

    Wow. Nice truck.

Is that the original seat? I have had problems with Tacoma bench seats sagging under the driver's right butt cheek. I have 4runner seats in my Tacoma.

I had 5-speed issues with '83 and '87 Toyota trucks. The next time I have ANY Toyota transmissions issues, I will start by inspecting the shifter seat. Or, for six bucks...just replacing it.

Original seat but had bottom cushions replaced and bench seat bottom recovered about two years ago.

Reviving an older thread but I love the recovered bench seat and would like to do the same to my newly acquired 1995 single cab. Any specifics on where you found the materials to do that or was it done professionally? Thanks!
