I would write to Saf-T-Cap and tell them about your experience with their authorized installer. They are a small shop, good people, and very serious about their reputation.

They may be able to help you speak constructively with the shop.

Before the shop tells you "it was that way (the bed) when you brought it in" - do you have any photos of that gap prior to the "fix"?

Yep. Have a clear picture from July 28 showing the bed and cab in perfect alignment.

As much as I want to believe either of those outcomes would come of me bringing this back to them, I doubt the shop that deliberately did this in the first place is going to jump to 100% correcting it and most definitely not buying me a new truck. I would love a new truck with a warranty at this point though!

Going to try contacting other collision shops to get quite for fixing frame as well as the paint job. I’ll then have the credit card company stop the payment and also contact my insurance to see if they can go after their insurance for the cost of fixing.

Wish me luck. In a world where I can pay a reputable shop over $4k to have my truck ruined, I’m doubtful I will come out ahead or break even.

I understand your reservations about bringing it back to the original shop. That said, I wouldn't end run them. Send an email with the photo's you posted here and see what the response is. In the meantime bringing it to another shop to have the work inspected is a great idea. Get that in writing and worse case present it to your insurer.

This right here. Go directly to Saf T Cap and ask them to help with what is a poor job by one of there certified installers. They need to see what there certified dealers are doing even if it was not intentional. Hopefully they can help remedy the situation.

OP, I know you're reluctant to bring it back to the shop or contact them. But you can't let this go unnoticed by the shop or SafeTCap. I would contact both of them to see just what their responses might be. It could (and should) work in your favor. But you'll never know unless you try.

Unless Safety Cap Auto Rust no longer answers the phone . Many Companies no longer do.

I would call on the phone.

Then what you do after all is your decision .

    Best of Luck.

OP you need to notify the original repair shop what ever way you feel comfortable. A cerfifird letter with pictures would be better, send it to them and Safe T Cap. If you have to go to small claims court to try to recoup any money you need to notify them of all the issues even if you get another shop do the repairs. Do this the smart way and you might be able to get some money if not all back and your rig repaired correctly.

Thanks for all the supportive comments, everyone. I sent a very friendly email to the shop that listed out the issues and asked how they wanted to resolve them. They responded saying they'll get the truck back into the shop to fix everything. I'm going to remain optimistic that it all works out and I will definitely update everyone here with the results.

Great. Document every op. Take pictures of all the issues prior to and after so that you and the shop are on the same page as to what needs to be fixed and that it’s done. Keep us posted.

Picking it up tomorrow! He sent me some pics and the frame looks straight and they polished the car to fix the overspray. I’ll post pics tomorrow once I get it home.

    UPDATE!

Hi Everyone, thanks for following and for all the supportive messages. I picked up the truck on Thursday but it's been raining non-stop since so I hadn't had a chance to take clear pictures of the work that was done.

So how did it turn out? Overall, I think they did a very good job at fixing the issues from the first round of repair work and with the original intent of fixing the rust in the frame and protecting the truck for hopefully another 5-10 years.

To recap, the major issues with the first attempt at repair work were that
    1. the frame was obviously bent
    2. there were untreated spots on the frame from where the lift points were
    3. There was epoxy overspray all over the paint of the truck
I'm happy to say the truck was returned with the bed parallel to the truck cab, they fixed the spots on the frame they missed and added another coat to the entire frame, and they detailed the entire truck to take care of the overspray. I also want to say that they were quite detailed in applying the coating they put on. They sanded and covered everything critical. The upper and low control arms, knuckles, skid plates, and they even cleaned up oiled the driveshaft. It looks great underneath right now. I'm not a welding expert, but the Saf T Caps look well done to me.

It was heartbreaking to get it back the first time and find all these issues. I was angry at first and nearly went nuclear by canceling the credit card payment and going after their insurance. Between my wife and the all of you telling me to go the friendly route, you convinced me to do the right thing that lead to the most positive outcome for everyone. Here are some pics to summarize the work.

    Bed and cab aligned:

Rear cap before and after (2 of 2 caps added)

    Underbody overall before:

    Underbody now:

A little detail of the rust-proofing they applied to the wheel assembly:
    IMG_6793.jpg

    And the entire outside:
    IMG_6671.jpg

There are obviously things that I could nit-pick but I think the truck is in great shape for a fraction of the price I would have had to pay for a frame replacement (if I could even find a frame). It looks and feels solid but, of course, only time will tell. I'll keep you all updated on how this treatment and the caps fare over time. I love this truck and I hope to drive it for another 130,000 miles. There's no new truck that could make me as happy as this beauty.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to see other pics.
