Anything welding

Well hello there!

I was driving down 4 lane about 2 miles from my house. I was feeling a little down as I just came from biopsy for possible skin cancer on my scalp.

Saw something black and looking like a welding helmet in the grass adjacent inside lane on south bound side. Because I jog that area regularly, I knew I could catch a median cut in only about another 200 yards.

Got it and it looks like almost brand new. Can't believe it wasn't scratched from the fall. $140 on Amazon. 319 ratings averaging 4.5 stars.

I actually have a welding project I'm gonna tackle in the next few weeks making a manlift basket for my pallet forks on Kubota. Perfect timing.

Hands down the best AC/DC TIG welder for under $1k with modern controls that even professionals can appreciate.

Three year no questions asked warranty and when you're ordering, you can even opt for replacing specific items (phone) for a little more for example, getting a longer torch, or skipping the air cooled torch altogether and getting the liquid cooled variant cause you want a cooler as well, etc.

So, I'm making parts for him for his low rider and he brought these over; they're hinges he'll weld the plates to for making them "dance" attached to linear actuators

They're super smooth and really low profile which got me thinking, I can make a flip up table top extension to my new table using these hinges with a fold out arm/catch

Interesting. I had an Alphatig 201xd for several years. I loved that machine. My garage shop burned down this summer, taking the alphatig (and lots of other stuff) with it, and I was thinking about getting an Alphatig 203xi. I've looked at the prime weld offerings, but the duty cycle isn't quite as high. Thoughts?

 

Get the 325X if you want more headroom

I've owned and pushed the TIG225X, a MIG180, and only got rid of the 180 because I have a Miller but also, I primarily run a MIG285.

Not to mention I run a

I've run all of these machines well past what is supposed to be their duty cycle, and this is especially true of my CUT60 cause I run it on my CNC table.

With the exception of a cheap clamp on my CUT60 (that I still haven't replaced), I've never had a failure to cut or weld anything or ever have a failure with the machines themselves.

The TIG225X I especially put through hard use as I learned to use one while at welding school; it was the instructor's personal machine.

 

All is improving then having friends in Israel is not helping.

Going to the Orthopedic Doctor this being unable to walk or climb on a horse is not going well.

 

I’ve had lots of skin cancers. Probably 25 or so. Been seeing my dermatologist 2x per year since 2003. Luckily your skin is pretty thick and skin cancer moves very slowly. As long as you get them removed before they’re through the skin, they’re usually not life threatening.

Melanoma is the worst. Needs to be excised asap. Basil cell, actinic keratosis and others are less dangerous but still need to be lanced, frozen or burned off!

Test fit



All bent, had to do this on my table since my brake only goes as wide as 19" and the shelf is 15.6" x 27"





I'm almost just planning to leave it as is as I intended to weld some 1/2" square tube to run down under the left edge of the shelf between the table's "crossmember"

 

If you're wondering why 1 clamp and 1 magnet, some of my square tube is actually stainless



Got multiple angle grinders, but these are my most used so they'll go on the table

Was trying to make use of space and add utility; I had to buy some remnants for the shelf portion but with a lot left on it, I'll easily make more than the $20 I spent on it (2' x 4' as shown in video)

With that said, all in I'm at $158 (table top) + $9.49 (adjustable feet) + $20 (remnants for the shelf) = under $188

The angle grinder holder was left over scrap and the square tube for the holder was more scrap from over a year ago.

I've decided to trim my table down.

It presently is 5 x 5.

I think I'm going to neck it down to 2.5 x 5.

Handling 4' x 4' pieces of sheet steel is getting old.

I don't do enough production work where I need that size.

I usually buy drops anyways, so the large capacity is really not needed.

Programing new soft limits is easy, so I can't use programming as an excuse.

Hit me with the pro's and con's.

 

Well...if you cut it down, it'd be more work to size up again not to mention the work alone to cut it down

It's nice having the extra room, convenient really

More time between cleanings, you can rotate cutting areas to spread the work load on your slats and stuff

I'd love to have a larger cut area myself

I mean, I could go on but that's off the top of my head

 

Maybe you guys can help me. My step son just started taking a welding course at school. I don’t know much about welding, but kinda wanted to pick up a welder so he can start practicing when he’s here. He’s doing stick welding now, but will be learning mig, and tig (not until next year I believe).

I don’t really do any metal fab work, and may use it a couple times messing around. Should I just get like a flux welder, or get a mig? There’s a guy locally selling a Lincoln LE31MP. I think it’s a combo unit. Can do stick, mig and flux? Says it’s 4 years old and only been used twice. Might be able to talk him down on the price. Is that a good welder and would suit my step son? What are some things to look for when buying used welders? Any info would be helpful and greatly appreciated
