I went to change my oil on my 2015 Tacoma V6 TRD sport for the 1st time today. I purchased in May (from a large Toyota dealer in Indy) of this year and have driven it about 3k since purchase. It currently has 39k on it. The truck runs and drive flawlessly..no leaks of any kind. Well today I decided to change the oil for the first time since purchase..checked oil level and it was right between the dots on the stick..begin to drain and man it filled my 7qt pan..went to fill up and 5.5 qts never hit the stick..I am at 7qts 2 oz to get it to the bottom dot on the stick..man I can not figure this out..

Did you check the owners manual to see the amount it calls for? I have a different engine then you and this a novice about yours but if the dipstick reads correctly it's hard to argue with that I would say.

Filter holds like a qt. Doesn’t fill up till you start it after the oil change… I’ll bet it’s over filled and/ or wrong dipstick. Never heard of needing 7qrts in a v6 taco

Yes..OEM stick..measures 25" long from o ring on top to tip..from what I can tell that's factory..the dealer I purchased from changed all fluids before I took delivery and I drained a easy 7 qts. plus out and it was right between min and Max on the stick..I have changed oil in all my other vehicles for 30 yrs..never seen anything like this?

    Question,

When you checked the oil on the dipstick did you have the engine running?

Not sure about the V6, but on the 2TR-FE you are supposed to shut it off and check it after about ten to fifteen minutes to allow the oil to drain from the heads.

I was thinking that if you checked it while the engine was running it might have indicated the correct amount because a substantial amount of oil could have been in the heads.

I can measure mine when i get home but sounds like whoever did the oil change last added too much oil, It should be about 5.5 qts with the filter.

From the bottom of the finger loop shoulder (the surface the dipstick tube nets against), to the top dot is 24". To the bottom dot is 25 1/8".
Again, not from the o-ring, from the shoulder surface on the dipstick handle.

Your engine is supposed to take 5.5 quarts. My stock dip stick is 25" from the tip to the O ring. For whatever reason, my dip stick and others on TW are pretty crappy. I get false readings on it a lot. First the oil doesn't stick to it very well, I scuffed mine up with a Dremel and that helps a little. Often there is a bead/line of oil that runs up the side of my stick passing both dots and making it very hard to read. I often take several readings and rely on the fact that mine doesn't burn oil yet so at 146,000 miles I've never had to add any between changes.

One last thing. Maybe somebody replaced the pan with an aftermarket one but I don't know anything about aftermarket pans and if anybody even makes one.

7 QTS is way too much as it's 5.5 QTS on both my Tacos.

The dip stick tube is poorly designed. Check it in the morning before starting it, after it sat overnight for a more accurate reading.

Your empty bottles are empty? Is there a puddle of oil under it? Did you spill while pouring it in? Is there an aftermarket oil cooler?

It should take 5.5, maybe 5.6.
