Anyone know the correct clamps for a 1st gen Tacoma. I was certain this was the correct one as it list the 1st gen Tacoma as one of the supported vehicles. It is their standard clamp.
I don’t see anyway these would work?

I’m not as familiar with the first gens, so this may be a stupid question.. Is the plastic in your photo a bed liner or is it the actual bed box like on the 2nd Gen? I thought first gens had metal beds.

I think it’s the OEM box? Says Toyota under the cab.

Yeah, but it appears to be in addition to your metal bed. To add the Softopper you may need to remove the plastic bed liner, or cut out holes like you did for your front tie down points

the holes appear the be pre cut in this bed liner. I thought about cutting them open more but wasn’t sure if it’s worth the trouble.

It may be worth asking other 1st Gen owners about removing or cutting the bed liner. Unfortunately I have no experience with it. Best of luck to you, wish I was more help

it seems logical that the liners is preventing the clamp from clamping. Maybe there’s longer clamps or something might call Softopper again. Anyways thanks

That’s the bed liner. It needs to get removed there is another version of the bed liner that doesn’t go over the sides (I have this style).

Going to try and grab longer bolts tomorrow and see if that changes anything.

This might help. The video shows how to remove a bed liner that looks similar to yours. Once the liner is out, exposing the lips of the bed rails, then you should be able to use the clamps and install your Softopper.

A couple other resources below. You could also ping specific members that have a Softopper on a 1st Gen too. I bet they would send you some photos or at least help clarify any questions.

It’s looks like I’ll have to remove the bed liner or modify the clamps.
Don’t want to remove the bed liner so going to look into longer bolts or some other simple fix.
This would likely be an issue with any sort of shell, soft or other wise. Thanks for the responses.

Use a 2" hole saw and cut a hole in each corner of your bedliner right below where the metal bed rail ends. That will allow the bottom part of the clamp to slide into place. It looks nice and clean with the hole saw.

I install toppers for work and had to do this all the time before spray on bedliners took over the market.

@Neal4x4 Stumbled on this thread as I am navigating your exact issue. I have the same drop in bed and just purchased a used softtopper off a buddy.

Any chance you figured out which clamps/what is the best solution here? did you cut the drop in bed liner? Longer bolts? pull out the liner altogether?
