    Hi Everyone
New to this forum. I recently traded in my 2017 Tacoma Sport for an identical 2023 Tacoma sport.

These trucks are identical. Same tires, suspension, and even color. However, the gas mileage between the 2 trucks is not even close. I’m the 2017, I could easily get close to 500kms (I’m in Canada) out of a tank. This 2023 isn’t even getting 400kms per tank. I haven’t changed any driving habits.

Also, when I filled the 2017, the distance to empty would say 670km. The 2023 says 476km (and getting lower every time I fill). All things equal and the fact the trucks literally are identical in every way, why is the mileage different? Is there a way to update the injection mapping or automatic transmission shifting?

thanks in advance for your responses.
    Jeff

Give the truck some time to learn your driving habits and break in.

Wait until you are past the break in period to freak out about mileage.

Fuel quality in the winter is worse. Winter blend hits mileage. On top of that, the engine isn't broken in. Took until my first oil change for my fuel economy to improve, so a bit under 5K miles. Idk what that is in kilometers.

My fuel economy slowly improved until about 15k miles.

Winter blend and the engine breaking in is probably your biggest factor along the ethanol in fuel up here.

For changing the shift mapping I can actually help you out there. I sent you a message

+1 on the winter additives. The fuel mileage has always been my #1 complaint on this truck, even more so than the cruise control.

I log every fill up with an app and after about 1500 miles my mileage did improve by about 1 MPG. It isn't just the engine that's breaking in, but everything from the output shaft down to the wheel bearings.

Great tips above. Also check tire PSI. We are getting in to colder months and don’t assume you took delivery of your 2023 with the correct PSI. Also, are you leaving the ECT button the same in both trucks?

I never touch the ECT button. Tires are the proper psi. It’s just hard to believe I can lose 100km per tank from ‘17 to ‘23. You’d think they would find ways to improve it. I’m at 2500kms on the odometer. Hopefully it gets better. I know it’s a truck and I shouldn’t worry about mpg, but having 2 identical trucks and having such a difference between them seems strange. Thx

We get fuel for summer in Canada? All 23 minutes of it?

Your former 2017 sport most likely had 3.72 diff (A04). That could be a factor.

If it helps my 2021 usually in the summer will push 600kms to a tank and in the winter it's around 500kms. Thats on the highway traveling about 105kph

I have a manual trans and i'm tuned though so not apples to apples.

when the truck was new my first highway tank was 350kms.... thank goodness it got better

I am definitely second guessing now. However I was starting to experience a few issues with the ‘17. But gas mileage wasn’t one of those issues. I was under the impression the 16/17 models had the most problems. Maybe I heard wrong.

No money, all went to truck...
Did you actually get that distance in both trucks?

Tank range means nothing to me. I prefer to go off of calculated MPG. or I guess kmpg.

Same. Not once I used tank range to figure out my fuel mileage.
