Could you send me an example of a trail/road that is 200/300+ miles of no paved roads? I'm very ignorant to how things are out west.

Also, you clearly see where he stated that the roads weren't paved right? you seemed to gloss over that one....

#1. Tacomas need re gearing on stock tires. They will survive on stock gears, but do yourself a favor and re gear. If you're staying stock 4.88s will work. I got 33s, roof and bed racks, and an RTT...I regretted playing it safe with 4.88s, I should have gone with 5.29s. Some guys have tried them on stock Tacomas and they perform really well.

#2. It will not perform like a stock vehicle. You have to go slower and more careful everywhere.

#3. What kind of overloading are you trying to do? For the actual overloading experience you can head out on a stock truck and whatever tent you want. Throw a webber and a cooler and you can go just about anywhere. That set up you mention is for someone trying to pave a new path up the Rocky Mountains.

The national historic pony express trail is a blend of wide gravel, dirt roads, and pavement, with detours that have gas stations all along it.

It's okay though bro, you can LARP as an overlander on the internet, we won't judge.

Dude, your ignorance is showing. We even have trails in the national parks out here that are legit trails, meaning way more than a fire/forest road, that are over 100 miles. That isn't even counting the drive from that gas station to get there. Then you can plan to explore other areas, off the main trail and add even more miles to the adventure. It's not hard. Bust out a map and look. Then there is all the BLM land, and other federal and state land that we are free to explore. Bust out Gaia or something. The only thing you are right about is sometimes you're not more than 100 miles radius away from a gas station. But, that is a mute point. Just because there's a gas station 50 miles away as the bird fly's, doesn't mean there's a road to it. These areas are not developed like the eastern half of the country.

I don't know why it's hard to understand? We shouldn't have to prove something that is a fact. If you don't get it, or don't believe it, come on out and experience it. It is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. Shit, hit me up, I'll take you on an adventure. Once or twice a month I spend 4-5 nights in Ca, Nv, or Az. Then a few times a year I'll spend 7-10 nights and explore further out. If you like getting away from it all, come on out and have fun!

    1) it really depends how much you like to explore/risk. You can easily get yourself into trouble, or easily stay out of it. I've never been in a situation where I needed a winch except for the time I went out completely stock. But I also am not fully willing to risk my truck or my mobility like some guys are.

    2) Hard to recommend mods for basic camping, everyone's needs are different, and our rec's will be pretty cookie-cutter that you could find on any list. If you're gonna do a RTT though, I would definitely get bed stiffeners and at least an add-a-leaf, if not a new leaf pack. They're heavier than you think, and the weight adds up with rack, accessories, and camping gear.

    3) I ran into this same issue with my setup as well...initially had a bedrack and a RTT, then realized i didn't like leaving my bed open so that I either couldn't use it, stuff would risk getting stolen, or it would be exposed to the elements (wasn't a huge issue until returning from vegas one day in the rain, took a side road, and covered everything in my bed with a thick layer of mud). So I ended up upgrading to a GFC camper which encloses the bed, provided more space than the bed rack I had (mid height), and is lockable. The price is steep but to me it was worth it, and I wish I had just bought the GFC to start.

    4) see bold answers within quote

    5) As far as roofrack/RTT setups...I'd suggest the Martin offroad Rack, seems to have plenty of good reviews from other TacomaWorld users. RTT, I personally only ever used the TuffStuff Ranger tent which had the overhang. I'd recommend them for sure, no issues with their product. Lots of people like FSR or iKamper. Here's the RTT thread with a ton of info.

You seem to have a real bone to pick on this issue lol

Several people who live in this area have already told you otherwise, and you admitted you're not familiar with this area. You don't have to believe them, but you also don't have to insult them if you don't want to believe it.

It’s just fun trolling the “Overland bros” on the internet that get upset when you tell them they aren’t actually overlanding, just off-roading.

Trust them bro, they totally hit trails that require 4 jerry cans rigged up to the bed rack.

Wait a minute, I thought that overloading was just camping. Which is it? I'm so confused!

Heavier springs to handle the static load are a must. My first overlanding experience was with a Leitner Rack and a FSR High Country roof top tent with Helwig Helper Springs and my '21 TRD Sport was constantly hitting the bump stops over the most minor off road terrain. Upgrading your suspension first is my recommendation. I bought the OME-005 Heavy Kit from 4WP that comes with the 886 front coils and the dakar leafs that are built to take an additional 600 lbs of static load above the stock taco.

I tow a tear drop built for the backcountry. It is cool to take my trailer wherever my taco can roam but it comes at a cost. If I had it to do over I would get 5.29 gears, an external trans cooler, and a tune before even considering towing. Pics are in my build thread linked below.
