With just under 70k on my Tacoma I heard a whirring noise on my Tacoma. After 35 years as both Auto body repairman and certified in suspension, air conditioning and many other areas I was confident it was front wheel bearings so I replaced both front wheel bearing hub assemblies. I still had the noise! I took it to a local mechanic where they said the Dorman hubs were defective and I should have them warranted. So I went to same local parts store and got two more and replaced them again per specs. Still have same issue. I am thinking of replacing the left drive shaft assembly and or servicing the transfer case lube, one at a time to get rid of noise. Any suggestions?

Does the noise change or go away in 4wd?

Noise goes faster as you speed up and slower as you slow down. Yo start hearing it around 35 to 40 mph

I now have replaced the left front axle shaft and the transfer case lube, noise is still there! I'm now certain that it is the bearing where the left axle meets the transfer case. In response to the gent who suggested switching in and out of 4WD I did and it made no difference!

Have you tried switching to 4wd and seeing if the noise changes or goes away?
There is a needle bearing in the front diff that is known to make noise, the test for it typically is to see if the noise goes away in 4wd.

Someone said it could be tires. I have heard similar sounds from tires so I rotated lt frt to lt rear and lt rr to lt frt, no diff!

From my experience at that mileage its front wheel bearings, lift the front end and spin the front tires while holding your coil spring. You will feel the "roughness". Front bearings are also easy to hear when driving, sounds like you are driving on super swampers.

Well folks, just so you know, a rear bearing noise can resinate forward through the frame and sound "for sure" like a front wheel bearing gone bad. I replaced both front wheel hub assemblies and the left front axle shaft and still had the noise. I then took it in to a reputable mechanic in TC Mich where they diagnosed front wheel bearings failed. I then told them I replaced and they told me they were defective. I then, frustrated took to another recommended shop and had them replace the rear wheel bearings. Problem solved! I would have done myself but don't have a press and one is required for the rears. Again failed rear wheel bearing noise can sound like its coming from the front!
