I've got a plate bumper, and I'd like to swap my loose hanging 4pin for a built-in or two. Someday I might tow a small live-in trailer, and would like to retain basic trailer functionality, which means having at least the 4 pin linear connector. The 7 position blade RV connector seems to be the most versatile and adaptable, but I don't like carrying adapters for everything.

I've been over thinking this. What would you do to maximize compatibility?

Just go with a 2 in one (7 way + 4way), they are readily available.
You don't have to have all 7 wires hooked up, just hook up the functions that you need such as lights and maybe a trailer brake controller.

So out of all these, in your experience of what's out there, the two I described (4 and 7 on the left) are most common?

The 7 way RV and 4 way flat are by far the most common trailer plugs, they are pretty much the standard now.
Occasionally you will still see 6 way round plugs on older trucks and trailers but most have been changed to the 7 way plug.

Most trucks with a tow package nowdays come with the 7 + 4 combo plugs.

I would go with something like this, that way you have both without the need for adapters.

i would definitely wire the truck with a combo 4/7 and wire the 7-way to the SAE-J2863 standard. that will work with the majority of cases. aux power, reverse, and trailer brake are going to be the optional add-on's that would be trailer-specific, .

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Every vehicle is hard wired for the common 7 pin trailer plug as all my trailers I might pull.

It is only a half hour or so to rewire a 4 pin trailer to 7 pin for me.

All the grief and frustration I had with those Darn Truck side converter boxes is more then enough.
