The mesh tip came off of the filler spout. I got the larger cylindrical piece out but the mesh is stuck in the left side. (The filler neck appears to split in two about a foot in.)

This is the spout I'm referring to. I added another 10 gallons and it's still there. My question for anyone who's had this assembly apart is 1. What are the chances it works its way further down and 2. What are the chances it will damage something if it does? I've tried magnets and vacuums to get it out with no success.

Have you tried one of these? Saved me many times.

That’s a tough call on the chances it will damage something. Even if the chance is only a small percentage it’s still worth considering.

If the mesh piece makes its way into the tank it’s very possible it just sits on the bottom, and if it were to be sucked up, the fuel pump is protected by the filter sock.
IMG_1137.jpg Still, not a good idea having foreign particulate in the gas tank, especially something that could have sharp edges.

The filler neck and vent tube are able to be removed from the tank, though not without a degree of difficulty, most people would tell you removing the bed is your best bet.https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fuel-filler-neck-replacement.758652/

You could then remove the filler neck and run something through lines to push the screen out

    Reserected from the dead.
    I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have ever pulled a tank and drained it, you will be amazed at the amount dirt in the tank.

Dirt, small rocks are always present.

The sock and the line filter will make sure no damage occurs to the fuel injection system.

You put it right where you'd know where it was when you need it.
