I haven't downsized, but I've seen many users come here and whine after downsizing after apparently not realizing they were getting a different truck while still expecting it to be the same.

It is smaller and it is not a V8, twin turbo V6, or a diesel. It's not a race car and it's just plain not a full size truck.

That being said, it's arguably more capable in a number of other ways. You can take it more places much easier. The fuel mileage will just plain depend on your driving. I tend to drive at 70 MPH and get 21-24MPG pretty regularly in the summer. It isn't as big as a full size inside, but is still capable of hauling full size adults (assuming you're getting a double cab).

Don't overthink it too much and don't read too much into things on here. Remember: this is a place where people bring their problems and complaints so it can feel like there are many to be had when the majority of owners don't have these issues and some that do completely overblow the issue.

Thanks for the replies. Today I officially backed out of the deal after a lot of thinking due to my Ram being completely paid off and trouble free (it’s a 2019 with low miles) and not wanting to take on new debt for a smaller less powerful truck. It also rubbed me the wrong way that the dealer was still not budging off a 7-8% markup on the Taco I wanted to buy.. that REALLY rubbed me wrong. So far all of the other 6 speed manual Tacos nationwide are either marked up or if they’re at MSRP they’re already sold or have a deposit.

I guess I’m gonna wait another couple years for the ‘24 4th gen to come out and get their kinks worked out… since they’re still offering the 6speed manual I might just get into one of those some day.

Thanks again for all the info y’all have been awesome!

Anyone who faults you for keeping a paid-off vehicle that is not a $400-per-moth repair-blackhole can be ignored.

Nobody can fault you for that decision. Dealers usually suck.

Hang around and watch for the 4th gen stuff that'll come out. Somebody on here will be snagging one and you'll get to see info on it. Hell, Toyota may have learned from the Tundra launch and the Taco might go more smoothly. Might even be good enough to up your timeline and get one sooner.

You don't have to have a Taco to hang around.

If you change your mind and still want to downsize I'd take a look at a GMC Sierra 1500 regular cab short bed. Short wheel base, enough cabin room if you aren't taking a nap in the cab. 2.7t4 like a modern midsize, old style interior like the Tacoma. Economically priced if you want RWD. The only thing you can't do is shift gears in it.

you could always get a miata or wrangler or mustang for relatively cheap to get back into a manual

I made the jump to downsize. Practicality did it for me. Had a Tundra TRD Pro but didn’t need the size and power anymore but still wanted a bed because I still hunt and camp with the boys. I like the extra room in a full size truck but how much extra room do I really need on a daily bases. I’m only 5’5 and to me I feel the taco fits like a glove. I can’t imagine taller guys/girls being comfortable in the taco but hey if it works it works. So far I feel the taco was a great move. Of course it won’t stack up against the tundra in power but I knew that going in. She’s nimble, smooth and definitely capable. Good luck to you down the road.

I got a good used F150 as a backup to the Tacoma.
I will never sell the Tacoma.

Wait a bit. Word is there are 200k repos a week now....there will be deals on a used one soon. Relatively speaking.

I love my tacomas, but drive a tundra and you’ll get one.

I did it folks. Traded in the Ram for a 2023 TRD Sport 6MT and couldn’t be happier!

I went from a single cab Tacoma to a double cab 6 speed, sold that truck to get a tundra years later which I ended up trading in towards a Ram 3500 with a Cummins. Sold that when the market was high and bought a f150 with a 3.5. All of the full size trucks were nice especially when towing but outside of that they all had me wishing I never sold my double cab 6 speed.

Great looking truck and thanks for the feedback. I've been thinking about a new truck for several years but just can't pull the trigger. It's a want vs. need for me as I only do 4-5k a year now, don't tow/haul and don't offroad. I love the looks and luxury of the Ram Limited Elite but I know I would regret getting rid of my Tacoma. The manual tranny is key for me as well because it's still fun to drive. I've gone back and forth on a new Tacoma or the Ram so your feedback helps solidify the thoughts of keeping my 2010 and waiting a couple of years on a new Taco. Thanks and best of luck with your truck!
