I'm not a fan of having an open rear diff, so I'd like to install a limited slip in my 2023 SR V6 4x4. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not interested in an electric or air locker, mechanical only. Thank you.

I like the spartan lockers. They are noisy but tried and true!

IME limited slip diff's are "limited" in usefulness. You don't really gain much over an open diff. If I had a truck that came with it, I'd make do. But if I were spending money I'd go with some sort of locking diff.

I've had vehicles with Detroit Locker and with a spool. The street manners are terrible, which is why I want a limited slip in this case.

If I was going to upgrade an open diff, it would be with an air or electric locker

I had a lunchbox locker in my old 2WD S10. That thing was a nightmare to drive in parking lots. Thing could clank and clunk like no other and people would just look at me funny

I know you said you wouldn't add a full locker but something I just remembered is if you change your mind go with an electric locker because someones the moisture in the air of an air lock condenses in the lines and freezes come winter preventing it's use (if you experience winter)

Detroit TruTrac is your go to here. Call East Coast Gear Supply and tell ‘em what you have and what you’re looking to get. They have excellent customer service.

It sounds like a TruTrac is a good fit, but looking at the Eaton link posted above, there's no TruTrac available for the 3rd gen rear axle, E-locker only.

Since you have an SR with the 8” rear diff, the TrueTrac is available. Unfortunately it is not for the larger 8.75” diff.

I’ve looked a lot. I’d rather have a TrueTrac than my factory locking diff. I have never needed the locker and likely never will.

I went with the TrueTrac from ECGS. Have about 30,000km on it so far.

The install went very smooth and the way the truck drives is fantastic. This will be my second winter with it and it's very predictable in snow and ice. The truck has alot more traction, and I get places in 2wd in the winter where I needed 4wd before.

It's by no means a locker but for what I do with the truck it's more than enough.

My Jeep TJ has front and rear TrueTracs, and they're more than enough for me too, and probably, too, for a lot of people. I love them... work great for mud, snow, slick conditions.

Just curious, what's the cost for parts and labor to install the TrueTrac? Like many, I've never needed a locker in a while but my last Chevy had a G80 autolocking diff and it worked perfectly and was always quiet. Just a very faint click when it locked in.

I ordered an assembled 3rd through ECGS with the TT and installed myself so not sure about labour cost. ECGS gives you the price breakdown for shipping and a core charge. I took an afternoon to do it and watched YouTube videos along the way, ClassyTacos videos were super helpful!

My friend is a 30 year Toyota dealership mechanic. He's charging me $300 to install it. The TrueTrac, carrier bearings, and gear lube were $653 shipped from East Coast.

He's also doing the non-prewired fog install for me for $250. He's a good dude.
