Q: Is it possible to do a transmission swap if I have a good 2001 5 spd 2-wheel drive transmission and put it on a 4wheel drive Tacoma with a shot automatic transmission.

if so what extra parts will be needed to convert 2-wheel drive tranny to 4.

I think you are better off just getting a different vehicle with the 4wd.

Parts, ECU, ADD, All electrical components that need to communicate to the ADD ECU and the Switch, LCA, CV, Drive Shaft, Spindle, and alot more.

I have two vehicles already. One has a bent frame with a manual trans the other has a good frame but smoked auto trans. do you know if the transfer cases can be swapped between the auto and manual or if there’s a list of what’s needed?
    Thanks

I haven’t seen a whole lot on converting a w59 to 4wd. Seems you have to take it apart, not as simple as just changing the tail housing.

I’d prbably sell the 2wd transmission and find a 4wd one.

Also not entirely sure the 4wd w59 would bolt up to the tcase that is behind the auto.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
This can be done though it is a major project .

Is this a money saving project ?? Because you have the parts . You really want the manual transmission?

The cheapest is just replace the blown automatic in the 4x4.

#2 Find a parts truck 4 cylinder with all the parts you need and swap things over .

I have done several Auto to manual swaps this is by far the best way

That gives you the clutch pedal and brake pedal linkage which needs replaced .

The clutch hydraulic parts to be used for fitting but replaced with new when the jobs complete.

The correct engine ECM and Harness if you need to pass emissions to be street legal. If your good with wiring you can work with what you have but it is very time consuming.

The correct drive shafts that most likely should be rebuilt before the project is on the road.

Not to forget the flywheel new bolts are always a good idea. Plus your new Clutch Kit and pilot bushing .

all the little odds and ends that get forgotten.

Doing all the labor your self it still gets expensive

    Best of Luck.
