So recently I had my timing belt break on me, and I don’t know if it damaged anything else around it. (Cylinder heads etc) I’m getting quotes for 1800 to fix the belt. But if more is damaged it gets closer to 5-6 hundred. I got 190k miles so I know I got so much life left. Should I go through with the repair or should I sell as is? What are y’all’s opinions?

    Is it an interference engine?

Not quite sure what interference engine means sorry. Do you think it’s worth repairing?

So interference means that the valves and pistons will hit each other if their movements are not timed correctly. When they collide it’s pretty catastrophic.

Your engine is not interference, so that didn’t happen when the timing belt broke.

Mechanic should be able to put on a new timing belt and it’ll be running again.

    Definitely worth fixing.

You mentioned $1800 to fix but then if more is damaged 5-6 hundred which is less than $1800??
Not knowing your engine $1800 for non interference engine timing belt sound a little steep...

On my transverse mounted 3.5 v6 in my Honda Odyssey it was $700 and that included parts (belts , pulleys, water pump , tensioner etc etc)

I apologize I should’ve done more research about my engine before posting. And I worded the pricing wrong. I have a 3.4l v6 I found out. And the mechanic said 1800 for the timing belt and I meant to say an additional 5-6 thousand if the cylinder heads were damaged. But if I have a non interference engine I should be ok to go for the timing belt repair right?

The earlier posters mentioned it a non interference engine which if correct and the engine was otherwise running well and was in good shape then as mentioned yes...

    did a quick google search

3.4 V6 is a timing belt and the 2.7 4 cyl is a timing chain. The V6 was first recommended to change the belt at 60,000 miles and around 2000 it went up to 90,000 miles. Also, the V6 is a non-interference engine, or "free running", meaning if your belt breaks you have a bad day, but your engine is not toast.

Check out this thread... I did a quick scan and the highest cost i could find was around $1000. Many DIY's did it themselves for around $500 in parts.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It is a labor intensive job that is what raises the price.

The thing with any engine work you never know what you will find till things are apart and inspected.

Did the belt break just from old age and never being changed.

Did something else fail causing the belt to break?

I admit I look at the worst possible case to be realistic .

Then I have the worst luck possible it seems.

    Best of Luck!

I am of the same mind set. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. And since belt broke you need to know what your doing to get the crank and camshaft timing in synch. I did the timing belt on a 1970's honda civic but it was done as a scheduled replacement. So it was easy to get things lined up.
