Question about cam tab gussets

I'm about to weld on the cam tab gusset kit this week. My first concern was that I have to weld the cam tabs onto the gusset so that both sides of the eccentric washers touch both cam tabs. after some research on how to achieve this, I found out that it's actually okay that there is a gap between one of the cam tabs and side of the washer. why is this? I thought the whole point of the cam tabs was to hold the washer from moving hence having them hug the washer on both sides. see the picture below from total chaos website, there is a gap and they said themselves in a thread that it is okay to have a gap.

The cam gussets you are showing are for beefing the tabs up. The tabs are known for flattening when offroading hard, or mild collisions shifting the arms.

Lots of inexperienced techs will flatten them by accident during alignments as well.

Here's what happens.

 

From my experiences, as long as one side of the flat cam is up against the tab, it will not move. This only works with aftermarket cams and cam tabs like the one in the pic Bishop posted(top pic). It's a lock out, it will not move. Obviously you don't want a huge gap, anything up to an 1/8 on one side should be good. Just keep it to one side. I can get you pics of mine later today if you want to see it. If you plan to reuse the stock cams, do not leave a gap or they will slide.

To do the lock out job correctly you will need the Cam Tab Gussets and a set of aftermarket cams/lock outs/Eliminators they have several names. I went with the cam tab gusset kit from Dirt King and a set of lock outs from 333 Fabrication. No more alignments ever.

i actually got the marlin kit to go along with the chaos gussets. If I remember right the marlins are made for stock cam tabs, did you have to grind away some metal to be able to fit it around the fatter chaos tabs?

 

Yes, they had to be modified. I’m not a great welder so I had a shop that had done it before modify them and weld them on.

 

Can you take pictures of your cam tab setup for me? I had the TC alignment tab gussets burned on this weekend but they could not get the 333 Fab cam tabs to work. The guy is a toyota master tech and said they tried in vain for 2 hours to get the setup to work and just couldn't get the cam bolts to thread through no matter what configuration they used. Any pictures or advice on how your setup looks would be greatly appreciated.

 

It's totally normal for one side of the lobes to not make contact. Won't shift.
