Went to the grocery store to purchase a birthday cake and some idiot kid decided to open their door into my truck before speeding off.

Left some scuff on the paint and a small but noticeable dent. I know nothing about paint/detailing. Can this scuff be easily polished out? I tried some rubbing compound and it did make most of the scuff unnoticeable except for this spot.

I am just hoping it is just a scuff on the clear coat and can be easier fixed as I don’t want to go through insurance for something small like this.

If your fingernail can grab the scratch you probably won't be able to machine polish it out. You might be able to minimize it. The dent can be pulled out with paintless dent repair. I wouldn't respray it. Find a professional detailer/PDR in your area.

A little trick to know if it’s a clear coat scuff is to spray some water with soap over it and if the scuff isn’t noticeable with the water on it then it’s a clear coat scuff that can be fixed by using some light wet sanding and polish

Took your advice and sprayed some water with soap and the scuff became unnoticeable.

Polishing compound, sponge pad, and a random orbital. It's pulled out more than a few scuffs on mine. This one is similar to yours, but instead of a little shit it was a tree branch at a campsite.

^^ I never bothered to pull the dent, but I also never notice it when walking by the truck. A good suction cup might be able to pop yours.

time to get some 3000 grit and 5000 grit to slightly wet sand it until the scuff isn’t noticeable then a good polish compound and you’re good to go.

Good lord what is wrong with y'all? Why in the hell would you immediately start wet sanding. OP start with some polish first. Do not use rubbing compound. Always start with the least aggressive method first as you are removing clear in the process. For example, if this is my truck I would start with Shine Supply Classic Polish (this what I have on hand, other brands will work as well). If that doesn't work, then I would step up to Classic Cut. Keep in mind I do have a machine polisher. That can be removed without wet sanding.:facepalm::facepalm:

Wash truck, clay bar and start with a least aggressive polish with a DA polisher.
Evaluate the damage and see if you need to step up to something a little more aggressive.
